Dispatches from the Non-Genre Press...

Hell, TFF set a box office record for its opening weekend.

.....Worst Star Trek movie to make it to #1?

Any way you slice it, this is set up for disaster just from the financial front. Why they'd want to make it even harder by cheesing off a segment of the only guaranteed audience they've got for this thing is baffling.

That's a bit presumptious to have the demographics for the new movie already worked out. Hmm.

You've already made up your mind, April. Are you trying to convert people or something? Misery loves company?

Remember, April is the only one true way when it comes to Star Trek. If you even remotely sound like you agree with him -- or at the very least if he's able to soundbite what you say into his likings -- then you're in the right. If you think differently than him, then you either need to be reprogrammed, executed or incarcerated.

And his way: Step one is to repeat step one.

Meh.

I've seen all the shows, movies and read a fair number of the books. By most definitions, that makes me a 'hardcore' fan.

I couldn't care less about the supposed 'canon' or if Kirk met Pike once or a thousand times.

It just doesn't matter.

Even if it did, there is no consistency to the Star Trek 'canon,' even within TOS itself, let alone series to series or between movies. It's a non-issue.

c. Symbolicly, she reminds me of a young, sexy woman who overdresses to impress, yet she's powerful, seductive, and has some hidden secrets. Over time, she becomes more self-confident and covers up...she doesn't need to advertise her sexuality. Indeed, she "ditches" Pike for Kirk. Pike's her first serious boyfriend; Kirk is her husband. She's dressed up for hot night on town with Pike, but later will cover it up and dress down for Kirk, because she's snagged her husband.

By the way, I expect there's a character parallel here in Uhura too. This Uhura is likely a bit mouthy, has an attitude, and can probably school Kirk. She's not going to be taken in by him. She's the woman he can't have; a woman who can, if she wants, have him, and a woman who can tame him. Enterprise is the same way, but she snags Kirk, where Uhura won't have him, and, as we know, Uhura winds up being her "voice," which strikes me as an interesting notion - and like Uhura in TOS, who was sexy and strong, who could wear a mnidress, and yet was a real lady, a "queen," even, so too was the TOS Enterprise we all know and love.

Put another way, in this movie, Uhura is younger and sexier. She's curvier. Heck we see her take off her shirt so we can see her bra. Well, that's the Enteprise in this movie. This is the Enterprise that'll take off her shirt so we can see her bra. Well, TOS Enterprise itself won't take off her shirt, but she's still wearing the sexy miniskirt. There's a evolution here, and I think JJ has picked up on that idea.

I love when people find hidden meaning in the bra. This was one of the more enteraining dissertations I have read.

Of course, a blog called "celebitchy.com" is an example of "mainstream press"

Come back when you have something of substance (sometime before the 23rd century would be nice, though I'm not holding my breath).

It's strange to me to see a quote from the director wanting to show the "emotional lives" of the characters spun as somehow a bad thing. You'll notice he doesn't say it hasn't been done before. He merely seems to think it's an approach with a higher possibility of success.

Go figure.

The bit about the motorcycles and horses was a little silly too. As if one could not be into both. Should we really be expecting to see Kirk riding his horse to the shipyard? Not terribly practical.

The trailer showed here last night on a movie premiere program and has subsequently appeared on other UK channels, the response especially from a lot of the non-fans has been favourable, in some cases excited.

Here's what I'd really like to know. Robert April derides this movie with EVERY SINGLE POST HE MAKES, whether it's outright disparagement or "statistics" that he goes out and finds to support his way of thinking. It's almost like the only reason he's on this forum is to talk smack about this movie and rub it in other poster's faces.

So, why don't the mods ever lock his topics? Other people who have posted topics basically saying 'this is why I hate this movie' have been locked for less. It's blatantly obvious (to me anyway) that the only reason he posts anymore is to rouse people's ire. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when people are literally trying to shove their own opinions down other people's throats, enough is enough.

4. Apropos, 3, the technology of the interior and the look is obviously "more advanced' and "bigger" than the original.

a. The Cage/Menagerie bridge was bigger.

?? :cardie: How do you figure? I think that's an illusion created by the color differences - the bridge set in "The Cage" is essentially the same as in the series, other than details such as the main and overhead screens, and the removal of the gooseneck viewers.

Personally, I find calling it an example of the press at all to be a bit of a stretch.

Sometimes they do.

Kirk should be riding his horse which is riding a motorcycle. Duh! :p

I've just been to see my nieces (who are both 13), they don't really know what Star Trek is and don't care.

I put the trailer on and they went "cool!" (they liked the bit with the car and the bit where we see the enterprise being built) and asked if I would take them to see it. :techman:

What a useless topic. I can pull up another website that says the complete opposite.

Of course.

This is of a piece with the same poster claiming a couple of days ago that the rising tide of positive Internet reaction to the new trailer is the result of "studio plants," or claiming a few weeks ago that a "consensus" was forming against the look of the new film.

It's wishful thinking on Captain Robert April's part, an attempt to manufacture evidence that there is some wide support or agreement with his concerns and P.O.V. where none exists.

Interesting that people are (anecdotally) coming up with about an 80% favorable response to the trailer Out In The World - the response here, among hard core trekkies, is measurably a little over 80% positive so far. And the release of this trailer has brought with it the biggest shocks to our expectations that we're likely to endure, so it's reasonable to think (until any demonstration otherwise) that response to future revelations about the film will continue to be favorable.

Didn't you know that we're all plants from the studio??

There's no way this film will succeed unless we come in here to talk about how awesome it will be.

I think this movie will make $200 million worldwide easily just based on curiosity alone. That plus the massive DVD sales of probably 3 different versions, will all help make this film profitable.

The more I look at the trailer, the more I cannot help but think that the juxtaposition of the car chase with the space scenes is such a smart way of saying "not the same!" Very intelligent use of a trailer.

I know a few people, showed them the trailer...they thought it looked like Transformers 2 when it first started.

Then again, so did I.

Yes, I'm sure they looked at the Enterprise and thought, "This looks just like that movie about giant robots written by Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who suck!"

Come on. Please.

Please try reading. I said 'when it first started'. IE: with the car chase scene.

Anybody else think it was a Trek trailer at that point?
