I thought Star Wars Only did a good job poking holes in this rumor.
Even though I would be totally fine with them tossing the sequel trilogy it's just not going to happen. Each sequel entry was a billion dollar film. It's not like franchises like Superman, Terminator, Alien, or Predator where it was easier to sell the idea of ignoring chapters that were generally considered less successful, and even that approach hasn't been proven a consistent winner. The only franchise that comes to mind where it worked was Halloween, and no Halloween film has made a billion dollars and that franchise was languishing after the Rob Zombie remakes anyway. It was ripe for a reboot or another remake. Also, horror films don't cost that much to make, so there's less risk here than benching the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
As much as I dislike the sequel trilogy, once again, the films were all successful and that means that there are many more people who loved, liked, or found them tolerable. That being said, when you look at toy sales and the declining pop cultural reach of Star Wars, which the sequels did nothing to halt and could've played a role in hastening after the prequels, there is cause for Disney to look at doing things differently whenever they start putting the next trilogy together.
I think the positive reaction to The Mandalorian, the focus on character, is what they should look to. And I hope they look at how much The Clone Wars, both cartoon series IMO, have played a role in redeeming the prequels and do something similar, either using The Mandalorian, or another series that helps better set up the sequel films or adds more to them. I would like to see a Luke Skywalker series way more than Cassian Andor or Obi-Wan. If they give Luke his due I think that will lessen a lot of the fan pique over his depiction/treatment in Episode XIII, and so, after a few years, once nostalgia kicks in and as the kids who grew up on the sequels and consider it 'their' Star Wars are older and writing the think pieces, people might look at the sequels through different lens.
Before Episode IX, I was wondering if they were going to use the World Between Worlds idea to bring Luke back and do whatever changing or retconning they wished to do, but they didn't. There were also rumors at the time that time travel would be involved. So, to me, if Disney had ever been thinking of using the World Between Worlds concept again, outside of Rebels-Episode IX would've been a great place to do it. It could've explained why Palpatine was back and brought Luke back in the flesh. Also, it could've been used to smooth out other things. But now that that moment is gone, and the sequels are over, I don't see why they would do that now. Even if they did in a television series, comic book, novel, or video game, it will not be as big as having it in a movie.
