Disney to buy Marvel...ramifications?

Is it April 1 already?

Anyway, I don't expect too much change as Marvel already has a few long-term plans underway (like their films). Then again, this *is* Disney we're talking about here.

If this means Marvel heroes pop up in Kingdom Hearts, then I'm for it :) Marvel Vs. Final Fantasy!

It would be cool if Pixar developed a movie based on a marvel franchise!

I believe Activision has a lot of the Marvel videogame rights so I wouldn't count on it unless their license expires soon.

From what I understand from the AP, part of the deal means Disney waits for some of these third party rights to expire. Their films are currently being made by Fox and Sony and more, but once those films are made (by 2012), they'll be absorbed into the Disney brand. Disney did that with Pixar's other deals, and I imagine that it'll be the same across all of Marvel's current contracts.

With how long it's taking Square Enix to make games these days Activsion may no longer have any Marvel videogame rights when Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out.

I still think this could be a good thing, and I still don't believe we're going to see any dramatic changes to the content itself. Disney has owned numerous properties over the years that featured "adult" content. I'm a little concerned about some of the merchandising potential in all this, but that doesn't strike me as enough of a reason to assume the worst in all this. I can only Disney taking but so much of a hands-on approach to Marvel.

How long until Donald Duck is shot, replaced by Huey,Lewey or Dewey before being resurrected in a multi-part crossover summer "event"?
Spidey/Pluto team up and Mickey Mouse getting an adamantium skeleton.

It can only be a good thing. After Dark Knight Returns and The Watchmen came out, the industry started to veer more and more towards the adult. This appealed greatly to all the 20-40 something nerds who were the most vocal fans and now make up a vast majority of their readers. But in the process they cast all those little kids aside who the majority of the material was written for. And they gradually abandoned the medium, in favor of anime and manga. Something that actually spoke to them. And both Marvel and DC have yet to recover sales wise because of it. They've become a niche market. They've turned their heroes into adulterers and crackheads in order to appeal to the very people who are the main reason the industry almost went under a few years back. They've had to rely on nothing but stunts in order to generate sales and public recognition. So I say kudos to Disney. Hopefully they can now cast all these losers aside and get back to actually selling books in massive numbers like they used to.

And coming soon...the marriage will be no more.

One More Dale.

Well, like many others, I suppose I should drag out my old "Disney Buys ABC" jokes and just rewrite them.
