News Disney exiting physical media market

I venture to predict that the "exiting physical media" will last just until someone manages to find a way to burn good quality "discs on demand" (the film equivalent of POD) and "pirates" turn into businesses. All these companies will be yelling about the money they are losing, find that making statements about not caring about piracy has left them in an iffy legal position and decide that the best way to tackle the problem is to cater for the demand themselves.

Amazon already does this for some obscure titles.

That article has since been taken down. But I assume it's about this news regarding Disney+ shows getting Blu-ray releases, starting with Loki season 1 on September 26, than WandaVision on November 28 and seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian on December 12.

Wow, physical releases of Disney+ TV series? That's incredible news! Hopefully this is the start of an ongoing trend. Hopefully people buy them, to show they studio that it's profitable to release them.

I'm not into the Marvel stuff, but I've heard enough good things about The Mandalorian that I'm willing to pick up the set sight-unseen.

I don't like steelbooks at all, but if that's the only option, then I will cope.

It was, yeah. Weird that they took it down.

This is probably the best place to post this. Various online media outlets are reporting that Bob Iger is looking at selling ABC to Nextstar in order to get out of the physical media market and focus on Disney+ streaming service.

So sell off a business that makes some money and focus on a business that's a net loss. I don't know what could possibly go wrong. Or maybe it's sell off ABC before it starts losing money and get whatever you can you get while the old people still watch cable before they all die.

The latter. Sell it while it's still making money so some other schmuck deals with the end of broadcast media and takes the hit.
