Disney and Doctor Who part ways

If he's writing Christmas 2026 now, they have a year and a half to hire a new showrunner for Spring 2027.
Typically, showrunners have been announced two years prior to their first season premiering in Modern Who. RTD was announced in 2003, his first season aired 2005. Moffat was announced in 2008, his first season aired 2010. Chibnall was announced in 2016, his first season aired 2018. RTD's return was announced in 2021, the Tennant specials aired in 2023. Unless a new showrunner is announced in coming weeks, 2027 will either be run by RTD or there won't be new Who content in 2027.

Considering the Christmas special next year seems to indicate a series IS coming in 2027... I agree.

Which would mean we either will get an announcement of a new showrunner before the year is out, who will also bring his own Doctor to succeed Piper's Doctor Where, with a new series for 2028....

Or, RTD stays for his third (and final?) year, with scripts he's said to have largely written, to resolve The Boss storyline, and hand over to a successor who won't be introduced until next year (or the year after).

Whats interesting in the second case, it would be the first time a Doctor Who actor would be carried over from one producer to the next, something not seen since Tom Baker's era in the 70's.

now we have to wait 1 year untill the doctor returns on tv

althought in the doctor who audio world they never got axed and the audios just kept going on and on since the 60s with many adventures that are off screen from tv with who knows how many companions doctors masters and ranis

Can I be one to say.. Its not the actors fault? All the Doctors of the "Modern" Era have been excellent! ( yes the older ones to, but to focus..)
Chris, David, Matt, Peter, Jodie, and even Ncuti were excellent in the roll, great actors. But the last say 2 were let down by substandard writing, Jodie was great, loved her version of the doctor, but the scripts.. Woof.. Did her a diservice.

My opinion. Clean house, Young Minds Fresh Ideas etc.

I don't see how that logically follows. I mean, I wish that were true, but that's total speculation.
The Beeb has said they want more DW. I'm sure that behind the scenes while they were waiting for the official D+ axe to fall, they had already made contingency plans.

BBC and BWS have a ton of sets available to cover pretty much any location needed, they have the VR Wall from Boom!, and 14 months before the special drops.

If they have more or less completed S3 scripts and a solid team of writers, there's plenty of time to produce a third season, even if slightly shortened, for a spring/summer release.

Personally I'd rather they get rid of bigeneration and the pantheon altogether, and focus on more character driven stories. Don't try to tie up the loose ends from S2, we saw what that brought us. Ok, maybe bring back Susan and Rogue but that's it.

So a discord chat says, and I repeat this with big reservations, that RTD is basically out the door, and him and Bad Wolf pushing for Peter Mctighe to replace Russel, but BBC thinks otherwise. Says the 2026 special will largely be the same as the Christmas episode he'd intended after the Reality War to be, but with the appropriate changes to tie up loose ends from RTD2, and also to make it more festive.
