Gerrold's Starlog bits on TNG were not informative in the sense that people expect now.
Starlog's go-to-press date appeared to be five or six weeks prior to its on-sale date, so whatever Gerrold wrote about TNG was at least six weeks old when we read it.
When he first wrote about the TNG characters, for example - not only had that casting-sheet information already leaked out through the trades and on usenet, but it had actually already appeared in the Star Trek Official Fan Club magazine.

Nope, by comparison we've heard a lot more from Discovery and in a more consistent fashion than back in the old days. I remember very well.
