I was sorta seeing the twisted remains of the Discovery there, but that was just wishful thinking.
Klingon cloaks here and Romulan ones in "BoT" made targeting difficult but tracking of movement easy. The jury is out like a snowman on whether the movement in "BoT" was warp, sublight, subpar, warped or whatnot. But OTOH we don't know the Ship of the Dead would have been cloaked during transit... (Or do we?)
Agreed about the victory conditions of this war being of interest. The Feds seem to insist on a map where the prewar border is a solid line and the front a dotted one: they probably have zero interest in conquest but don't want any of their worlds to fall under Klingon rule. Would they be happy with leaving the worlds if the people can be saved?
The Klingons don't really have common aims, seems to be the point. It's not a war against the Feds, it's an excuse to have war as a thing. But those leading would want tangible loot to solidify their own position as victorious leaders. And various factions would want specific loot, preferably for their own faction, and thus probably defined by what they can hope to hold onto after the general fighting is over. The Imperial Seat, if it has any say, would want to see the Federation hurt so that it can't retaliate, and also suitably looted so that the Empire can recover.
The average warrior on either side might indeed not worry much about what gets won or lost. These people don't appear to have much in the way of planetside lives, as usual...
