Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

I was sorta seeing the twisted remains of the Discovery there, but that was just wishful thinking.

Klingon cloaks here and Romulan ones in "BoT" made targeting difficult but tracking of movement easy. The jury is out like a snowman on whether the movement in "BoT" was warp, sublight, subpar, warped or whatnot. But OTOH we don't know the Ship of the Dead would have been cloaked during transit... (Or do we?)

Agreed about the victory conditions of this war being of interest. The Feds seem to insist on a map where the prewar border is a solid line and the front a dotted one: they probably have zero interest in conquest but don't want any of their worlds to fall under Klingon rule. Would they be happy with leaving the worlds if the people can be saved?

The Klingons don't really have common aims, seems to be the point. It's not a war against the Feds, it's an excuse to have war as a thing. But those leading would want tangible loot to solidify their own position as victorious leaders. And various factions would want specific loot, preferably for their own faction, and thus probably defined by what they can hope to hold onto after the general fighting is over. The Imperial Seat, if it has any say, would want to see the Federation hurt so that it can't retaliate, and also suitably looted so that the Empire can recover.

The average warrior on either side might indeed not worry much about what gets won or lost. These people don't appear to have much in the way of planetside lives, as usual...

What are red lamps?

What are red lamps?

He may have edited the post, but it reads LED lamps, although the excited use of caps lock makes it harder to tell.

And he's referring to the bumps on the shoulders of the landing party armor jackets, which people were querying following the last episode.

Oh, right. Yes, finally a use for those.

Any idea where the torps were fired from? When Lorca gave the command, two departed the saucer topside to his left, from slightly different locations; one to his right. In exterior/Kol view, torps kept coming from saucer topside, until Kol obscured the source of further shots that were definitely from somewhat lower down. Nothing need come from farther to the sides than the radius of the inner ring, I think.

After the partial spore jump, the ship in the Prime universe?

According to the showrunners, DSC is IN the Prime universe already. So something will happen that erases DSC from memory OR they are lost in alternate timelines for good, like Quantum Leap except no Ziggy or Al.

If in another quadrant in the Prime universe Milky Way,I would prefer they not pull a Voyager. Another universe would be more interesting but they need to get back to end the war. Single or multiple episodes to get home?

When Lorca and Stamets were looking out upon Pahvo, I had a question - does the force field have a built-in filter, protecting the eyes of anyone stupid enough to look at a star directly?

...Maybe it's afternoon in space already?

Pahvo vegetation repelling blue rather than green radiation is unlikely to be significant. But it might in theory mean that the local flora is so desperate for energy that they suck in shorter wavelengths, too (meaning the star is dim) - or that the local flora feeds on a spectrum with the emphasis on shorter wavelengths, too (meaning the star is more harmful to the human eye). The difference ought to be minimal anyway.

Heck, with Lorca overdosing on his eye drops and Stamets dividing the attention of his eyes across myriad universes, neither of them might have much of a problem there.

That's not a viewscreen, though, but a hole in the wall. And not even the sort of hole that blinded Georgiou's team when the Light of Kahless was lit, with proper futuro-glass - just a hole, plus supposedly (hopefully!) a forcefield.

Then again, besides stopping physical stuff such as air trying to escape from that shuttlebay, forcefields are famous for blocking radiative energy from getting through. Ideal for dimming that starview? (And selectively, so that the background stars still shine brightly!)

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but Barron Grimes' ship appears to have a name as can be read on the hull, it looks like "The Fe..." something but from the screen grabs I have it's hard to make out the last part or even the length of the inscription.

Is the Crossfield class a newer design than the Constitution class, or it was recently refit to support the Spore Dtive tech?

The dialogue suggests a brand new science ship purpose-built for the spore drive yet capable of supporting hundreds of other science projects simultaneously.

Nothing is said of the class ship, the USS Crossfield. Unless (atypically) the USS Glenn is the class ship for the Crossfield class, we have that either the USS Crossfield is already decommissioned/lost by 2256, or it was never equipped with a functional spore drive to start with.

Or ships classes in this time period are not named after the first ship of that class. So there may not even be a USS Crossfield.

I recall that John Eaves recently mentioned that all class names of all the ships in DISCO have a namesake vessel. So I'm thinking yes, there is a USS Crossfield, but it was likely more of a testbed vessel that didn't have full spore drive capabilities like Discovery and Glenn.

Much in the way that NASA's orbiter Enterprise was never launched into space but just a testbed for the other real space shuttles. First in the line, but not a production-run model.

I'm thinking it's both newer AND specifically designed for spore drive experimentation.

I'm thinking she may be "brand new" and "designed around" the spore drive in the same sense that the NCC-1701 in TMP was "an almost totally new Enterprise" that had been "redesigned" around a new engine paradigm as well. I see the teaser version of the ship as being the original Crossfield class configuration, from which only the Glenn and Discovery were refitted, thus explaining why neither is the class ship.

Even under this interpretation, the original configuration could well still be more recent than the Constitution, which during TOS was supposed to be "about forty years" old as a design (per The Making Of Star Trek), even if the Enterprise herself is suggested to only date back to 2245 by later background materials. (Neither was ever specified onscreen.)
