My Feelings are as follows:
Good:
I love Michelle Yeoh. Having the actress reprise any of her characters is a good thing.
I like the idea of having Discovery/S31 look at the same problem and solve different pieces of it, giving a richer texture to the universe.
Bad:
I would make so many series with Michelle Yeoh before S31:
Star Trek Shenzou (animated) - Prequel to Discovery with all the actors now on Discovery
Star Trek Shenzou (Live) - Same as above
Terran Conquest - a prequel to Episode 9 set in the mirror universe
Why does this need a new series as opposed to making Discovery's seasons longer.

Why does this need a new series as opposed to making Discovery's seasons longer.
Because "premium" television series these days only have eight to thirteen episodes per season, and Star Trek must be "premium" to make people feel better about paying $6 or $10 per month to watch it.

The Kelvin Timeline is a reboot. Just because they pussyfoot around the subject by maintaining ties to the original continuity as a means of getting Leonard Nimoy to appear is irrelevant.
isn't that sort of the point? they're casting a wide net and making a bunch of different types of star trek shows that'll appeal to different types of tastes.

I also think they're trying to guage what viewers will react fondly to the most, so when they eventually start weening off 52 weeks of Star Trek per year, they'll have a better idea of what they want to more solidly gravitate towards in the long run. Pure speculation on my part.
