'Discovery' lacked discovery

Well, season 1 certainly wasn't.

In the Vulcan Hello after Burnham has been thrown into the brig, the crewman who is injured on the bridge and is ordered to sick bay by Georgiou, sadly laments the fact that Starfleet is about exploration and should not be at war. Similar sentiments are expressed by Stammets about the Disc and his research in the same episode.

So in case anyone missed any of the interviews or articles in the run up to the premiere, they actually put it into the very first episode.

I interpreted the crewman's dialogue as an acknowledgement by the staff that they are aware of what Trek has been in the past and a set up for this particular version of Trek (season 1 at least). It was like saying, "look folks, we know what Trek has been, we're not doing this out of ignorance or arrogance, but come go with us while we tell this story". Frankly, I think it's funny that they maybe felt compelled to do this, but then we are talking about Trek fans and, oh yeah, this thread. So, not arguing either, just explaining season 1 to you.

"Can anyone remember when we used to be explorers?"

The problem: This exact line of reasoning has been used before as an excuse to drop the "exploration" aspect of Trek. Multiple times. It hasn't worked then. It didn't now.

Just one more things were this "revitalization" of Star Trek feels more like late-era Berman/Braga Trek, instead of a fresh new start...

I think STD is named 'Discovery' for some of the same reasons why STB was called 'Beyond.'

It's a response to the fan criticism that ST has lacked exploration. It's a marketing consideration when these projects are being titled.

To be fair, ST: 'Beyond' was the first nuTrek movie to take place entirely out of the solar system, and only the second of all Trek films (Insurrection was the other one), and in a plot that didn't involve Earth.

So the title was somewhat appropriate.

95% of Trek probably takes place outside Earth's solar system. Most Trek movies may involve Earth and its solar system at some point, but most of them spend time outside the solar system as well.

Regardless, my point still stands. I don't think that's the sole reason for the Discovery/Beyond titles, but it is A reason IMO.

Did you miss the part about only season 1 having been aired to date?

I was SO expecting 'Discovery' to give us... er... some bloody discovery moments! ?............... There has been NO discovery at all.
Search for Spock wasn't really a search.
Enterprise was such a rip-off, no commerce tips at all.
Star Trek: The Next Generation is actually 3 generations later
Also... Undiscovered Country? Zero undiscovered countries

This has been rather amusing to me

Edit: You quoted yourself that IS amusing :rommie:

According to the Star Trek: Discovery Synopsis page, "Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself."
