'Discovery' lacked discovery

There has been NO discovery at all.

Nope.

We had rocketing through an asteroid field to discover an ancient spaceship, giant space tardigrades, a spore network spanning universes, that spinning is the way to travel, a space whale, 142 different ways for Lorca to die, a planet of blue light aliens that are amateur radio enthusiasts, the Mos Eisley quarter on Qo'nos and most importantly we discovered that the real Good Place is the friends we made along the way. :p

I don't argue ;) I just don't think Discovery has been about discovering at all. It has been a war story and a personal journey of a mutineer who screwed the system.

Yet Star Trek did some... trekking and Voyager had a voyage. Discovery lent its name to a ship that was seconded to a war effort. The whole purpose of Discovery was not to discover anything but to be the pride of Starfleet's war effort.

The show lacks a clear vision of what it wants to be anyway. It's neither here nor there. The characters and themes are to precise to be another 7-heroes-have-adventures romp, but at the same time, neither of these characters or themes are really used/explored. It's all very superficial. Here's a war. Oh no, wait, here's a mirror Universe. Oh no, wait, here's the war again. Ah, fuck it, season's over anyway. Here's the Enterprise!

It's a show without direction (but with like 20 executive producers and show-runners) stumbling from one gimmick to another.

According to the original press release, "The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."

Yeah. That would actually be GREAT if they would include that.... Hopefully for season 2 and onward...?

Titular, yeah? I was SO expecting 'Discovery' to give us... er... some bloody discovery moments! Had this childlike hope of some science fiction story where a crew of Star Trek humanoid aliens and the like would be discovering something.

We have been duped. There has been NO discovery at all.

Perhaps the Discovery wasn't outward but within. Burnham discovered herself. Or something. Season 1 was awash in symbols of duplicates, dark mirrors, etc.

That's funny. I guess they meant the entire unreleased series as a whole, not just S1.
;)

That was hardly their mission in this first season, though they did try and forge some kind of alliance on Pahvo. However Discovery centred around the vessel being used for war purposes. They didn't seek out the mirror universe, Lorca wanted them there.

Why does that surprise you? That press release was from 2015, back before they even knew what the show would be CALLED, let alone what its actual storylines would be about. It's a vague boilerplate "Star Trek" press release, not a plot synopsis.
