'Discovery' lacked discovery

Just as an aside - Enterprise ... a 'bold undertaking' it's a good name for Star Trekking both as a vessel and a show.

Just because of this thread, I literally hope they discover absolutely NOTHING next season. Like, not even sweat on Stamets's uniform armpits.

Nothing.

Because spite.

Here's a war. Oh no, wait, here's a mirror Universe. Oh no, wait, here's the war again. Ah, fuck it, season's over anyway. Here's the Enterprise!

It's a show without direction (but with like 20 executive producers and show-runners) stumbling from one gimmick to another.
Um... there is that.

I wasn't expecting there to be a huge amount of discovery to be honest, not in the first season, there is a lot that needed to be setup such as characters, motivations and backdrops and overarching storyline, that's not even including the MU stuff we also got, plus it was all packed in to only 15 episodes.

I will say this they packed in quite a lot into those 15 episodes, there wasn't anywhere near as much filler as I expected.

Search for Spock wasn't really a search.
I know what you mean The Search for Spock title and tagline should really have been:

Star Trek III
We Found Spock!
We Weren't Even Looking For Him.

Or

Star Trek III
That Klingon Bastard Killed my Son!
Not That I Knew Him That Well Anyway.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wrath of Khan could be:

Star Trek II
We Should Have Killed Him The First Time!
Wont Make That Mistake Again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Motion Picture could have been:

Star Trek
FFS Kirk Took My Ship!
Screw You Guys I'm Going Home.

Or

Star Trek
My Girlfriend Is Completely Bald!
Possibly A Relation To One Punch Man, A Carbon Based Unit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

People would have flocked to see them.

And the adventure continues.

ALL those examples have had a deeper meaning for their respective shows' name other than "we just picked a random name".
Then tell me, what is the deeper meaning behind Cheers, Veronica Mars, Murphy Brown, Everwood, The O.C. and Melrose Place? And I want explanations for ALL those examples.

The name of a thing (especially in art) always carries a deeper meaning of the subject.
NCIS, MacGyver, The Dick van Dyke Show?

Not every name has a deeper meaning, come on.

http://veronicamars.wikia.com/wiki/Veronica_Mars:
The name "Veronica" is the Latin form of 'Berenice', which means "true image" (a little nod to Veronica's job as a private investigator and her desire to find out the truth). St. Veronica is the patron saint of photographers. She goes to Neptune high. Drives a Saturn. All this shit has meaning and is connected to it's content.

That's, like, the core characteristic of what "names of stuff" are in general, this is especially true for art.

I'm not gonna' do all the thinking for you (or researching for shows I haven't watched). But you should definitely give it a try! It seems like it might seriously open your mind, if you manage to look a bit beyond the superficial, and see that meaning is often distributed over multiple planes of content, and includes more than just the most obvious.

It's a science vessel, seems a reasonable name to me. Especially given its history as a spacefaring vessel.

So far, the show has focused on perfecting the military applications of the ship's research. Although there was the outbreak of war, according to the CBS-owned StarTrek.com's Discovery synopsis, "Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself." [bold formatting added]

The most logical explanation seems to be that Fuller chose the name for the series, which drifted away from his vision after he left. Maybe his plan was for Discovery to discover many alternate universes (not just the MU). Maybe it goes back to his original anthology idea - that what we'd end up discovering was new and interesting aspects of the Federation throughout its history.

You know they didn't even set out to 'discover' the Mirror Universe. Lorca led them by the nose! They even needed a randomly passing tardigrade that found its way to the Glenn to complete their 'discovery' of spore propelled travel. Oh and a randomly passing mutineer acting as science specialist to observe Ripper reaction to spores. (That took smarts). If one was to limit the concept of discovery to this vessel's scientific/war efforts they've needed some props along the way...

They could discover Space Fungus and it would be a discovery. Discovery isn't just discovering aliens with Snickers Bars on their foreheads who will open fire or need to be taught the "right" way of doing things.

Something mysterious would be fun to discover, though.

If spore drive were able to work without being dependent on a sentient being to operate it, Discovery would have the potential to discover more than anything else in the Fleet with its Spore Drive.

Hey, let's not let facts get in the way of this pedantic argument over a show's title.
