CBS is getting money out of me either way, so season 2 is pretty much going to happen. I see Star Trek I like and that's not something that happens much at all anymore, several years between movies is a long time.
Having good Trek to look forward too a week later or a click of a bluray remote is a big deal.

I think the show look awesome, and I am eagerly counting down the days until it premieres, but I can still admit that production design on Starfleet side hasn't been anything mind blowing. It's pretty much just a more modern looking version of the stuff we got in the TOS movies, and the 24th century shows. My issue isn't that I think it looks bad, it's just that RAMA is making it sound like it's some huge, amazing, groudbreaking masterpiece of production design, and I disagree.
You can find people on the internet who will say anything, I could probably find just as many people who disagree with you.
I like the "look" of the show so far. Everything is slick and modern and I really like that. I'm going in cautiously optimistic for the most part. I just wish we can get a trailer that shows the Discovery close up, and I'm not talking about the very first teaser we had last year.
Never said it did. I was speaking for myself. When I don't like something I can't lie about it. That doesn't mean I automatically hope it fails though.
Of course, everyone's opinion on this will differ. However, I found all of the TV series to be pretty uninspiring to be honest. TNG (blah, by far the least visually interesting internally, externally, even down to the props!). DS9 (my favorite sequel series but the look wasn't great), VOY (best looking of the sequel series but an average show), ENT it was ok.
None of them blew me away visually. I still enjoyed many of them and it was because of the stories. I think what I've seen of Discovery visually is at least on par with the previous series in terms of design, but ultimately I'll be judging it on its ability to entertain me. Obviously the SFx are technically a higher quality because of the larger budget and technical advances since the other shows. I think the props look fantastic. Will have to see the sets and ships in action to get a real sense for what they look like onscreen. But, they won't decide my enjoyment of the show.
I think it is "yes and no" for me. The sets help sell the universe and I enjoy the show more if I like the visual part of a particular show. If the stories are absolutely spectacular then less than stellar sets would likely get a pass. But, if the stories are meandering or uninteresting, then the look and feel of the universe might be what keeps me around.
True, if the stories are great AND the sets/ships are fantastic, that's preferred. But, if the stories are good, I could live with mediocre sets/ships.
This is pretty close to how I feel, although I actually like DS9's sets and stuff a little bit more than Voyager's.

Well, they are TOS-like to the extent that they're (apparently) real buttons and knobs of the type that was used on electronic equipment in the 1960s, when TOS was made - as distinct from the "jelly bean" candy-colored cast resin buttons used on the TOS Enterprise. They must have scavenged a whole lot of old stereo equipment, among other things, for those knobs. 
And yes, they are a real nice touch.
You know where there is a direct TOS reference there is the transparent shield/hood at the front of the console - it has the shape of the hood on the Jefferies-designed transporter console.

TBH, my least favorite thing I have seen so far is that badge Cadet Tilly is wearing. However, the more I see of them, these uniforms are really growing on me. It may not be in line with The Cage all that much, but this show seems to be setting up its own unique retrofuturism look.
