Can someone tell me how DSC is "ruining" Trek? If you download it or stream it does the rest of the Trek collection vanish?

This line of reasoning always forgets that people want new things from properties they enjoy. The old stuff may still be there, but eventually people want more new stuff in the franchise they like. So, having the new stuff be crap does effect people, because even if the old stuff doesn't vanish they're not getting anything added to it. Even with all the Trek available, its natural to want new stuff and to be pissed if the new stuff they make isn't what you consider a quality product. I don't know why wanting new stuff that is like the old stuff is a bad thing (and I don't mean a copy of old stuff, but something new that isn't a bizarre, barely recognizable thing like Discovery)

I am sure they will find something, I have been told the ENT moved it and quote "Kelvin is an affront, a mocking parody of all that is trek". I am a long time table top RPG player. This is basic edition warring BS and you can't reason with an Edition warrior

Sorry, I don't get angry when new stuff isn't added to the properties I like. Farscape, Stargate, most of Heinlein's works, Dune, the Invisible Man, among others, are no longer getting updates. Does that "piss me off?" No. Is it disappointing? Sure, but it doesn't make me angry.

Secondly, I can recognize DSC just fine as Star Trek from what I've seen and would be willing to give it a chance just based upon the science fiction facet alone.

So, I appreciate your explanation, and I'm trying to get it. But, even when ROTS was a disappointing outing with me and my friends, there wasn't ever anger.

Well...Abrams Trek nearly did, but I was fortunate enough to find some solid neutronium as shielding. Was a close call though.

Except TOS to TNG was still less of a change then Discovery is making, even if it people at the time, unused to new Trek shows, would probably have reacted equally as bad to any change. Hell, the Klingons appearance change was even set up in the earlier Trek movies so Worf's appearance wasn't even a shock. So, its a completely different situation. Sure, some fans just hate any change (like the people who are angry at who was cast as the lead of Discovery, I'll never understand that mentality), but Discovery happens to be a massive change that barely resembles Trek and what it does resemble is more the recent movies then anything (minus the connections to classic Trek that the reboot movies had). Whether you like those changes or not, there is a lot to like or a lot to hate that is big enough to effect even people used to new Trek shows getting made.

They set up the expectation for more Trek, but are delivering what some people (including me) consider garbage. So it makes sense to want more from a franchise you like that is actively making new stuff.

Right. And I'm not saying she is a Mary Sue, I'm just really concerned that she might be with this secret sibling bullshit.

How is it a secret? You're making quite a few leaps of logic here. Being an unknown relative doesn't equal Mary Sue. Nor is it a sign of fan fiction thinking. Pro fiction is full of such characters, as I pointed out previously.

I can understand not liking something but "hating?" Being "pissed off" about it? That doesn't make sense to me.

ETA: Also, doesn't make sense to me to wish someone to be jobless in an industry because of not liking their work. Still not sure how they "ruined" anything.

The 43-year-old Brooklyn-born Puerto Rican actor rounds out the most diverse cast in Star Trek history.

I don't expect anyone to hold my opinion but me. But, I don't understand the anger either. Star Trek has been a near dead franchise several times over, and I got to explore it with other people who shared the interest. Same thing with "Dune", and "Starship Troopers" (the book) or "Space Cadet."

Different people have different levels of connection to something. I care about Star Trek, so I obviously want more of it and stuff I'll like. What they are doing to a franchise I really like is pissing me off, but I guess if someone is not invested in something enough to have an emotional response its pretty much impossible to explain an emotional response to them. I think what they're doing is crap, and that pisses me off. It really can't be explained better then that. I can explain what pisses me off and why, but anything else is like trying to explain to an actual android what emotional responses are.

No. Ok, then.

Never mind the fact that I grew up with TOS, found Kirk's death incredibly painful, and to this day do no watch the end of TWOK or SFS because of all the emotions that come with those films.

Yes, I care about Star Trek. I want to see it contiue. And I thought VOY and ENT were poor choices but I never wished ill will or hatred upon the production crew. Same with the Prequel Trilogy. I wish no hate towards Luas even though I disagree very strongly with him, and was massively let down by the PT.

Fandoms are weird. I'm over on a Doctor Who forum cheering that they've finally cast a female Doctor, but over here I'm being painted with a broad brush for having a concern about the new series' writing.

There's a vast difference between them. Casting a female Doctor is a milestone. You're complaining about episodes you haven't even watched yet.

Look, I'm excited for new Star Trek set in the Prime Universe. I'm excited that it's a woman of color that's the series lead. I'm excited that there's a Chinese captain. I'm excited that there's a Latino doctor. Aren't those milestones as well? I think most of the Federation designs look amazing, even if they don't look like they're contemporaneous with TOS. A secret sibling smacks of bad fanfic. And the Klingons just don't look like Klingons. None of those last three, the "complaints", will stop me from watching. But they have certainly tamped down my excitement. I'm sorry that my concerns threaten your enjoyment of the show somehow, but simply because they're not a problem for you doesn't mean they're not a problem. And yes, I recognize that simply because they're a problem for me doesn't mean they're a problem for others. But hey, this is a discussion forum. Not every criticism needs be dismissed out of hand or met with nuclear fire.
