Discovery at SDCC - Consolidated Thread

Think the better word would be "reimagining", not so much a reboot. Sometimes it's good to retcon somethings and clearly it's important to one update the visuals, but two give Discovery it's own voice as well.

Discovery is certainly a reimagining, Fuller outright said it in one of the early interviews. Realistically it will probably be a full (soft?) reboot.

And yeah I'd say "soft" reboot would be appropriate. In terms of "effected" canon WNMHGB would be the only thing effected by the changes so far presented by Discovery. Cage is technically set before this show so the styling of the Cage can easily be written off as dated, and replaced by the styling Discovery presents until what is seen in TOS. Personally I have never taken WNMHGB seriously and kind wish it was retconned to either fit more with TOS, or just removed in its entirety (personal feelings of course).

New pictures of the final Discovery design! And holey moley, does it look ugly. Seriously, these suuuper long nacelles are NOT flattering...

We had a much better design one or two re-designs ago...
Yeah they really needed to lop off like the whole back third of the nacelle to make it balance more to the hull shape. Still feels like it needs refining, especially considering all the angles it'll have to be presented at on screen.

No, the new design is definitely an improvement. The bottom of the secondary hull is still hideous, but the upside looks pretty tolerable.

In any case, I really like the transporter room set, it has the sort of TOS vibes I was hoping for.

I like the updated design more, minus the nacelles. They seem a bit too long to me too.

Now THAT is a design I can get behind!
The production design is really not that bad.

But please, please, rework that hideous monstrosity that is the CGI-model of the ship...

The only way it would make any sense, design-wise, is if all the tech and bridge shots we've seen are from the future, like after TNG and VOY. Otherwise you have to believe that the Federation gave up touch screens for scrolling paper and massive switches.

I don't want it to be. I just want the design not to destroy all sense of consistency.

Ok, you really need to look at it another way. TOS was designed in the SIXTIES. They had no concept of anything, we were lucky to get what tech we did, even down to the pseudo-clipboard Kirk used on the bridge.

So, if you can understand that it was literally IMPOSSIBLE for the team to either predict the future or implement it based on budget, then it should make your life easier.

I'll put it another way - in 50 years, THIS show will probably look dated. Would you defend Star Trek 2067 or stick with your assertion of consistency?

DSC is set ten years before TOS, or there abouts. Look at the consoles of the DSC Federation ships. Now look at the consoles of the TOS Enterprise. Now try to explain how they go from DSC-tech to TOS-tech in roughly ten years. And more importantly, why...
I could but would it be accepted?

The nacelles (and the cut-outs) are basically the only real differences of the updated design. The rest is just more detailing.

And both those changes are not good.
You are right I suppose. It still looks better to me somehow. Perhaps I got used to the design. I need to see it in motion and with proper lightning.

The highlight for me is the transporter room for sure. Makes the photo released a few weeks ago seen out of place and looks like home. I've got to warm up to the ship designs. I think I'll get there. I had the same initial reaction to the Kelvin in ST:2009 when it first appeared.

I have to agree about the new angle on the transporter room. Simplistic design which resembles TOS' simple look, and yet is its own design.

Based on those reflections in the transporter...pod...thing, it looks like those loudspeakers line the whole surrounding walls of the room. I think the design looks great! Very different, but great!

Also, the full images of the Discovery, I can get behind. The straight shots look kinda frumpy and weird, but at an angle she looks real pretty. I think it might end up being how like the Ent-D looks weird at straight shots, but looks real good at angles.

I did a really quick overhead sketch of the transporter room, along with what I'd guess are away team lockers, and my guess of 10 transporter pads with how large the room is compared to other ships.

Looking at this and comparing it to the previously release EW photo, it looks like instead of having all the pads arranged in a hexagon, they wrap around in a circle around the edge of the room. Sort of like the linear arrangement of the Regula One transporter, or several movie Klingon transporters.

They sorta did that in Star Trek 6. Anyway, the Shenzhou bridge has both touchscreens and switches and buttons. There's still a lot I don't like about it, but at least it's not just touchscreens.

That transporter room set looks gorgeous! And Discovery itself is also cool. Bring on the show already!
