Discovery at SDCC - Consolidated Thread

Io9 has bigger versions of the stuff that's already been posted, and few new things, including the descriptions for the "Torchbearer" suit and T'Kuvma's armor. They also show the Tricorder and Communicator that are on display.
I know this appears to be a very different take on the Klingons, but honestly, I don't care, I'm just loving everything I'm seeing here.:techman:

So it is still called a D'k tahg, also this says T'kuvma's specific costume is honours ancient Klingon ways.

You are mistaken about the Starfleet spacesuit. Read the text in the Instagram post.

Huh? Noice!
I just only read about the klingon suit, and thought it would be the same with the Federation space suit, since all the trailer shots of it were fully CG.
But they have a real space suit prop? Makes sense, to film the actors in it. But also: Just noice.

The space suit in Discovery is both a real costume, as seen in the pictures, as well as a "digital stunt double" CGI version for wide shots in space. I DO know this for a fact, so he was correct.

Yeah, give the people who deal with blood the white uniforms. Still ridiculous. Yeah, I have a lot of friends who work in the medical industry, I know it's "realistic", but it's still dumb...in real life and in Trek.

I do like the new badge design though, love how they integrated the TNG pips into the pre-TOS badge. A lot of it looks really cool, but it all looks post-TNG, not pre-TOS. Please stop doing prequels that will inevitably look more advanced than the previous shows.

Concept art galore:

@startrekchina: Klingon starships concept arts. So I've heard that they are inspired by deep ocean creatures. But I guess they just had more time doing deco https://twitter.com/startrekchina/status/888111086385352705/photo/1

Ugh. They should have just called these baddies something else. They don't look Klingon, the designs don't look Klingon, the only recognizable bit is the logo. The more I see of the designs, the less enthusiastic I am about the series. Here's to hoping there's a last minute switch to the future...

I don't think the Klingon ships are beautiful or anything, but they are an interesting take. Think about it. An actual alien species would probably not build vessels the same way humans do. Klingon D7s look like something humans could conceivably construct. Two nacelles, a body, a neck, and a bridge section. It doesn't look truly otherworldly.

These knew Klingon concepts, while kinda ugly and weird, do look like something from another world, and in that way I can appreciate them.

Pretend you have no knowledge of Star Trek whatsoever and you were in space and ran across a D7. You might think "Hmm, maybe it's from Earth? I don't know?" You run into one of these Klingon concept ships and you'd go "Holy shit, aliens!" because they don't look like anything that would be built here.

I couldn't find the post I was thinking of, so I'm just going to post a general comment.

My biggest struggle right now is the cynicism towards the designs. I'm not saying everyone should like them-far from it. I think the inclusion of a phaser rifle is rather odd, and that the Discovery's design leaves much to be desired.

That said, the thing that I have seen carry Star Trek forward has been the characters and the story, the humanistic and optimistic attitude that things can get better. So, I guess it frustrates me that the cynicism is so strong when there hasn't been a single episode seen yet and yet DSC is condemned again and again.

It makes no sense to me.

My problem is one of believability and consistency.

There's no way Starfleet goes from this...to this in the span of ten odd years.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of the designs look great. They just do not look like they're pre-TOS in any way at all. There's just no way Starfleet takes a giant step back in design and usability and technology in roughly a decade. Some rando ship has better bridge tech than the flagship of the Federation ten years later...nope.

We have 0 story context to base that assertion upon.

Not saying it will make sense or it won't but why not give it a shot?

The only way it would make any sense, design-wise, is if all the tech and bridge shots we've seen are from the future, like after TNG and VOY. Otherwise you have to believe that the Federation gave up touch screens for scrolling paper and massive switches.

Oh please. Get over it. It's not going to be TNG - deal with it. :)

I don't want it to be. I just want the design not to destroy all sense of consistency.
