Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Ok say we're acquainted with Burnham, Lorca, Tilley, Stamets, Saru and Tyler (who aren't the most likable people either). Other star trek shows have at least twice as many main characters.

TOS - 9 characters
TNG - 13 characters
DS9 - at least 20
VOY - at least 15
ENT - at least 12

Number of characters does not equate to anything other than....uhhhh....number of characters.

I don't think anyone knows what you're trying to argue at this point.

This is a different show. Different structure. Different themes. Different approach. You either like it or you don't....and that's ok...but this standard you are holding DSC to with regard to the number and development of background characters is nonsensical, particularly when we are only 7 episodes in.

We're almost half way through the season then we'll probably not see season 2 until 2019. Then on top of that half of the regulars on the bridge are there for decoration. :wtf: They thought we would be happy (or get away with) with the very little they gave us but they weren't counting on Orville to show them up. Hopefully they'll try harder next season.

Ok man.

I thought last weeks was the best episode yet it could still be better

I'm watching this review, I've seen a few videos with this guy already. He's a former star trek writer.

They "thought" people would buy it. Happiness has nothing to do with it-at all.

Secondly, Discovery is doing a different style of storyline than Star Trek's past. First DISCO is too different, and now its not focusing on background characters enough.

Seriously, what Star Trek series is expected here?

I AGREE with you. I agree that you like disco. I agree that I don't. I am also OK with that.

If you don't like it, I'm fascinated to understand what compells you to continue to watch, vote in polls, and post in message boards dedicated to the show.

I mean, I don't like "Big Brother"....but I don't pop into the Big Brother forum to vote each episode as a "1," pick fights with fans of it about how it sucks, and generally act obnoxious about it. I just...you know...ignore it and everything to do with it. Like any sane human being would do with something they don't like.

So what gives?

k I watched that review that guy gave. Maybe it's because Discovery is focusing more on fancy visuals and less on story. Visuals don't impress me in general which leaves me having to rely on the story. Their story arc that's not that intriguing.

Maybe Discovery will do better next season though. I thought Fear the Walking Dead had a terrible first season and complained about that every week. But they redeemed themselves this last season. Anything's possible

And I like the story so its clearly a YMMV moment, not a character's are not developed, or background officers need more screen time or what-have-you.

Otherwise, I have no idea what the standard that is being used to measure here and will continue to be extremely confused.

Airiam did talk in one episode. It was only one line. She is the only character who is not an undercover Klingon spy.

The standard being used is "I just don't like it...so I will find small, mundane details to gripe about to justify and rationalize my opinion"

Who the fuck knows? As far as I can tell, the only series that would be acceptable is a series that is a direct continuation of 90's trek with ships designed by rick sternbach, visual displays created by Mike Okuda and stories that are safe, predictable and recycled from previous series. The characters also have to be perfect and never ever make mistakes or have conflict with one another. Also, apparently Braga is cool again, so he'd probably have to be involved in some way.

Nope

Then everyone would go berserk and say that this is stale, franchise-fatigued, derivative, unimaginative crap.

Which is what was happening 15-20 years ago when according to the fanbase Voyager and Enterprise were apparently the worst and Berman and Braga were RUINING EVERYTHING.

Precisely.

But, everything is ruined all the time always in the franchise.

Just remember that.
