Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

As the joke goes, there are about 30 good TOS episodes out of 80. Most of those were in the first year of the series.

There's also the "low-hanging fruit" aspect: do the Planet Run By Computers, do First Contact, do the Mad Scientist, do the Time Travel episode, do the Space Combat episode, etc...

TOS became repetitious in year two, and relied more often on the popularity of the characters themselves to carry stories.

I once wrote an episode guide to a fictitious TV series. I managed to put together an entire twenty-plus-episode first season just by running through all the stock plots: the Ten Little Indians episode, the Most Dangerous Game episode, the Evil Twin episode, the Amnesia episode, the one where the heroes get stuck with a baby, etc.

It was scarily easy! :)

Exactly!

Michael Piller once said that the difficulty of coming up with stories on TNG was that when they were under pressure "we can't just say, 'Let's do the rodeo episode.'"

Every time I see an episode of some old thing on MeTV that's set at a rodeo I think of that - who knew that it was one of the "old reliables?"

Please tell me it was Galaxy Quest.

Nope. Vixen the Slayer, a XENA-esque tv show featured in a novel by a friend of mine: WARSLAYER by Rosemary Edghill. But it's basically the Xena version of GALAXY QUEST: the star of a popular TV fantasy series gets transported to a magical kingdom where she's expected to save the land for real.

Just for fun, the publisher included my bogus episode guide as an afterword to the novel. I also provided an introduction praising the TV show to the skies. :)

Lots of great Season 2 episodes in TOS. I just can't see the repetition there.

I'm not in the US so I haven't seen the Orville.
Why has it got an 18% critics rating? And ranks so high (relatively) in the people's vote.
I'm hoping its as good as the people say and not just the haters of Discovery rating it high.

There are four first-rate episodes, a few good ones and too much Planet Of The WTF - Nazis, David Souls, Romans, Blonde Vietnamese, Tea Party Cavemen...

I'm hoping its as good as the people say and not just the haters of Discovery rating it high.

Ain't nobody got time for that shit - "downvoting" is mainly fan paranoia and frustration at people liking what they don't like.

I'm in Australia as well. I managed to find the first 4 episodes on Youtube and overall I think the show is quite good. I don't understand the 18% approval rating and I don't think it's accurate. I say this as someone who prefers Discovery to the Orville.

I haven't been able to find episodes 5 - 6 so I'm hoping it will get put on netflix or Stan or even xbox live at some point.

It might be a mistake. It has a normal rating on all the other sites.

P.S. What's the weather in Australia today?

I'm in melbourne the weather here is always all over the place. There's a common joke that melbourne has 4 seasons in one day. Today it's 15 degrees celsius, but a bit humid. As a result I'm wearing a hoodie and shorts to keep both bases covered :D
