Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

I didn't realize episode 3 was even out yet. Shows how much I pay attention to TV schedules.
I didn't either till I saw tons of reviews online this morning and was wondering why there were no spoiler warnings.........then I remembered it is FRIDAY. The show aired last night.

Fox let's you watch online with minimal fuss and commercials so I will do that if I forget to watch Thursdays

I skipped the second episode after discovering football had cut into my DVR timer, so I was pleased to discover that FX is rerunning the episodes after they air on Fox. Now I don't have to record the high-def version. Just passing along in case anyone else didn't realize.

Poor Discovery, all that hype over Diversity and then Orville goes and blows anything they might have out of the water in the third episode.

I'm not certain how it is you can make that statement when you haven't seen Discovery yet.

Orville's third episode, while thought provoking, does very little new that we haven't seen before on television. Also, for a series that's set in the 25th century, it relies far too much on modern day pop culture to accomplish anything. It also lost 40% of its audience moving to Thursdays. I've enjoyed Orville for the most thus far, but it has some weaknesses.

It lost 22% percent from episode 1 to 2 and now another 40%. Yeah 62% always is good s/

In the key demo, yes. Overall viewership is down about 40%.
The demo is more important than the number of viewers. The demo is what is the basis for ad rates, and shows have to reach certain ratings based on advertising contracts, and when they don't, that's when "make good" clauses can go into effect.

That's....really bad for a show with a higher (I don't think massive) budget. Fox has cancelled shows with ratings at that level
It's not great, but I'm sure they're going to give it some leeway since it's Seth MacFarlane, and see how the show trends out over the season. If it's stable at this level, and there are good numbers for the live +3, live +7, and streaming, that could be helpful.

Terra nova basically had Steven Spielberg in the title credits. They really don't care THAT much. They've cancelled the Cleveland show, aren't making a ted 3 and didn't even make a million ways to die in the west. Execs are much more cold hearted than we give them credit for sometimes

And, yet, no nearly as cold hearted as they are often lampooned.

Yeah, they still let Cleveland Show get to four seasons, though it's ratings were decent the first two I think. :)

While that's fair and I do understand that, in this matter, I was discussing overall viewership. I worked in advertising for a spell. Admittedly I wasn’t very good at it. But both numbers were important.

I think it will continue for a time. Last season, networks really didn’t cancel shows. They just didn’t add episodes. If Orville continues it’s drop, MacFarlane or not, we’ll not see anything past the first 13.

Also, remember Orville is likely a much more expensive series than Cleveland Show was.

Honestly even in the last season it was something like 1.5 or 1.8 in its key demographic. So not a disastor by any stretch, and of course a lower budget than orville

I should clarify, when I mean cancelled in reference to the Orville I actually mean not renewed. I always mix the two terms for some reason

Oh yeah, I definitely don't think they would ever pull the show. I was thinking more long-term (e.g., renewal decisioning).

I'm just a numbers person who always likes to discuss ratings and television in general.
