Discovery #4 for U.S. streaming demand in 2018

CBSAA is not Netflix, that can get away with saying Bird Box was watched 50 million times in a weekend without any proof. They are Netflix, they can do whatever they want. If Discovery is really doing great, CBS should really make the viewing data public and not force fans to turn to 3rd parties for analysis, that’s kinda scientific but no one knows for sure. It won’t hurt, it can only make CBSAA look better to publish official data.

This is basically true for all your giant media companies.

The same reason Netflix doesn't release numbers is the same reason CBS All Access doesn't release numbers. Their bottom line is based on the number of subscribers, not how well any individual show or movie is doing.

Except while Netflix doesn't need to market itself too heavily to get new subscribers, CBSAA still does. CBSAA and Netflix are not in the same ballpark

So what I’m gathering from what I’m reading the demand expression idea is that even if you mention it or *gasp* produce or even watch a negative video on something you dislike, it counts.

Haters, I’m not sure how to tell you this, but you might actually be helping the evil “STD.”

:alienblush:
The hilarious thing is such an argument makes no sense as hell, Nielsen ratings work the same way. All they care about is: "Is the TV on and tuned to >Show< at >Time<.

They have no way of knowing:

- Why you are watching said show.

- IF you are actually watching said show (and commercials)...as you could be in another room, or doing something else and just left the TV on.

- IF you are actually watching said show (and commercials)...as you could be in another room, or doing something else and just left the TV on.

Haha, I recall Comcast tried to fix that by implementing some kind of camera/scanner thingy in their cable boxes, so they could actually see WHO is watching the show and what they were doing (or WHO they were doing, so to speak ;)
I don't recall it went anywhere (for obvious reasons) and luckily Comcast cable boxes are a thing of the past (at least for me, haven't had Cable TV in about 5 years)

Ha! PA does look at what fanfic has been uploaded. Awesome. Those Doomclown followers keep referring to themselves as "the fans" like they represent all of Trek fandom. LOL. Parrot Analytics knows where to really look--at places like An Archive of Our Own.

It scours and measures downloads, photo sharing, video streaming, blogging, wikis, fan and critical sites and social media postings - a total of one billion data points per day. The resulting data is then weighted by how engaged you are with the show - because 'liking' it on facebook doesn't necessarily mean you like it, and 'sharing' doesn't actually mean you've read it. But if you're writing fan-fiction about Game of Thrones, then most likely you're going to be tuning in. If you've illegally downloaded instead of waiting for it to arrive in New Zealand, then you're definitely a fan. The result is a number that out of context is meaningless, but used in comparison to other shows can tell you what is likely to tank and what's likely to soar.

Discovery has about 1685 works uploaded at AO3 as of this posting.

ETA: Orville has only about 123 works uploaded. Interesting as it highlights the difference between the kind of fandoms engaging with the two shows.

No one single measure (like demand expressions) may tell the story, but we certainly have enough varied and independent data points now to indicate that the series is successful.

Arguments to the contrary are almost just diluted ridiculousness at this point.

How the #### is Discovery beating the Grand Tour? These are obviously wrong.
Also... Sabrina??? It was alright but nothing amazing.

You need to stop believing your internet experience is everything. Been to Tumblr? How about a fanfic archive? Heck, even a Twitter search would show how wrong that statement is.
Internet experience? I’m talking about the real world. It’s usually just MCU and Trump talk there. :)

You just said "except here," meaning internet.

Wait. Am I missing a joke?

It's very obvious:

Healthy demand expression numbers
3 seasons (2 renewals) of a very high-budget / costly show
CBS planning a renewed franchise based on the results they are seeing
CBSAA eclipsing their subscriber goal numbers
Good (not great, but good) critical response
Various industry awards/recognitions/nominations
Good fan attention at conventions etc.

....All mean that the show isn't popular or successful.

You know...because I read Reddit, watch a couple YouTube vids and listen to a couple guys at work talk about tv shows. And because I personally don't like it.

#rationalizing

With the proliferation of streaming, I expect that Parrot Analytics and similar services, will become industry standards very soon. PA wants to measure the “full” impact of a show using all media (especially social media) as a barometer. The way Nielsen did it in the 50’s and beyond, is no longer accurate or, in some cases, even relevant. Studios, production companies, production staff, are looking at more than just who “tuned” in every week as a measure of how large a footprint a show leaves.

Like the old style Nielsens, these new measurements will translate to dollars.

Here is something (actor) Scott Grimes posted on Twitter back in January:
(This is NOT the kick-off of yet another Orville vs DSC argument)
Ways to help @TheOrville succeed

Use hashtag #TheOrville in your posts on social media

Watch ep's live when they air

Stream ep's (& or watch again) via official places. FOXNow app, Hulu etc

Wear your #TheOrville Tee's, hats etc

Buy official merch, Soundtrack, S1, S2 ep's etc
Grimes seems very aware that more than just weekly viewers is being scrutinized by TPTB these days.
