Disco Ending In 2024

Yeoh hasn't gone from Trek to the stratosphere. She was up there long before Trek. BAFTA nominated for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as far back as 2001.

Michelle Yeoh was a firmly established B-list movie star by the early to mid 90s, while Jeri Ryan was much more of a TV starlet.

Also the elephant in the room is Jeri also suffering through an embarrassing failed first marriage when still young and wanting a more happy homelife in her older 30s/40s.

If they are ending Discovery to save costs, would a spinoff featuring Discovery characters really be that logical?

My take on this is that Discovery was indeed Cancelled by Paramount. This was after Season 5 was not planned as the final season.

This delay to 2024 is to re-tool Season 5 so it functions as the final season for Burnham and her backup dancers. We'll find out soon if reshoots are happening.
Your take is wrong. S4 showed a potential back door pilot to 32nd Century SFA, with Tilly teaching at the academy. There's definitely potential there for Mary Wiseman (or anyone else from the original crew) to lead a new show. There are plenty of supporting characters from S3-4 (and soon 5) to explore that time period still with something fresh. Discovery may not have originally been planned for 5 seasons but it's still a successful run. 7 years is a long time for an actor to be tied to a particular project. I imagine that a 6th and final season was always a question mark and 7 was probably never in the cards.

My speculation is that P+ will spin off new shows from both SNW and DSC so you have two concurrent live action shows per season. Titan is a possibility but even if the show gets ordered tomorrow, there's still two years plus of casting, writing and shooting before we see anything on screen, and I doubt that any decision will be made until Picard finishes its run.

The ability to tap legacy trek actors for guest or recurring roles suggests to me that they may continue to shoot in LA instead of tearing down the sets or moving everything to Toronto.

Of course there are plenty of characters to follow up on. But generally speaking (though there are exceptions - see SNW) spinoffs are less popular than the original show. If Discovery didn't warrant keeping on the air due to some combination of low viewership and high per-episode costs, how would Starfleet Academy be any different?

I remain deeply suspicious that a Starfleet Academy show would work out, but if given the choice, I am pretty sure they'd prefer for it to be in the 25th century with an old hand of Berman Trek like Colm Meaney in the lead adult role, rather than trying to use Mary Wiseman of all people as the draw.

Just one or two would save money, especially if they aren’t the DISCO leads like SMG or Doug. As I understand it, the entire cast of shows get raises every season. The longer a show lasts the bigger the budget chuck to actor payroll. A spinoff featuring a secondary character would cost less as the actor would not be pulling down the same as a lead actor with multiple seasons under their belt.

Someone find that thread predicting how long Discovery will run for. I'm sure I said 5 seasons. What do I win?

Discovery was so many different things during it's run, I'm curious what (if anything) will replace it.

I know what I won. 4 years of terrible story telling and Canon violations to make my head swim. Glad this show is finally going out. Thankfully they only had 5 full adventures and no more.

New contracts, renogiated options, and less expensive costarts.

Exactly.

Few modern shows go beyond 5 seasons. It gets harder to keep telling stories for the same crew. And many of the actors would be looking into expanding their careers into different shows or films.

Any 25th century show has to use the Picard era, and leading shows with legacy characters who are well into their 60's is not a recipe for success.

I'll always have very, very fond memories of Season One. I liked Season Two, despite the presence of Pike. But I wasn't a fan of the other two seasons. However, I'm impressed that the series managed to last as long as it did, considering that most streaming shows rarely last beyond three seasons.

Ryan is no Nimoy. Plus, let's be honest. Jeri Ryan would be pushing 60 by the time any kind of spinoff series would reach the masses. The world is a horrible place, and Hollywood is even worse. Do you really think an actress, pushing 60, is going to play hardball if a leading roll in a series came her way? No.

How old is Yeoh, again?

I very much enjoyed the first half of both S1 & S2. The end of S2 was a miss for me. I never got as high in the show again after that, and the Burn reveal was awful. And it would have been more interesting if they had gotten into bed with the green lady. S4 was better.

Hope S5 gives them a worthy send-off, but not optimistic given they did not know it was coming.

Yeah.. a Mary Wiseman/Tilly show is really what audiences are clamoring for...

As far as the Toronto production studios at Pinewood, they could use some of that freed up budget and space towards Strange New Worlds S3, which is set to lens quite soon.
