Based upon what history though? Star Trek's name, for all the other attraction it has, has not had a strong history of video games. Even with Trek board games there is little that I see causing a furor of interest, even with my strongest of tabletop playing friends. The appeal just is not there. I think if they were willing to try something lower key, moving away from the fighting mechanics and doing much more a sim style development they might have a chance for a midlevel game. I don't see them doing much more.
Looking at their Twitter account (https://twitter.com/trekresurgence), it seems like there was a panel at SDCC over the weekend, but I didn't see any new come out of it yet.
agreed, there are so many Star Wars games why can't we have a good Star Trek games that aren't free to play
STO is a pretty solid Star Trek game without doing any of the end game. It does need an upgrade as it's starting to look dated.
STO is great for what it is. A F2P Star Trek game that allows you to command your favourite starships with the occasional cameo from some of the more popular Trek characters. It does need updating but it's still a very good game considering it's free.
Visuals and some of the game mechanics definitely need to be upgraded though. I know the engine they use is old, but it wouldn't be without precedent to make a new version of the same MMORPG with a new engine.
I don't disagree at all, I'd very much like to see an upgrade to the game mechanics on the ground mission side. Something a bit more Elite Force would be spectacular. But, for what it is, I still think it's the best Star Trek game we've seen in a long, long time.
In fairness, visuals aren't everything, but ST:O was released over 12 years ago. The amount of subscribers (total player base) for ST:O is about 2.729 million, of which 77,780 people play daily. I don't know if this is a sufficiently large user base to warrant a re-release of ST:Online (or make ST:Online 2) with better graphics engine and game mechanics. Could they do it? Yes I think so. But the problem is the game dev team is running on 'skeleton crew' it seems and no new major content is scheduled to be released. In fact, the existing Cryptic engine still has some room left for upgrades, but I think the general consensus is that they probably won't be doing something like that. On another hand, they DID drop support for some old GPU's and introduced Lighting 2.0, but I don't think they will be making further changes to it. Given the influx of new live action and animated Trek series on TV with fairly diverse content, whether there is a new Star Trek MMORPG game at some point with modern graphics and better game mechanics remains to be seen.
I don't understand why anybody would need more than a couple of tier 6 ships on STO but people keep buying more apparently. Probably just to get the traits mostly.
