Direct to DVD?

Anyone think it would be a good idea for DS9 or TNG whatever movies that go right to DVD. I was thinking along the lines of B5 Lost tales. I don't know if Paramount would go for this, since they're probably linked the future of Trek to JJ Abrams and Bad Robot. *sigh*

I wouldn't mind seeing a Titan movie.

Will not happen. Not after the money Paramount is making with the current Trek movie. The dollars have spoken.

I doubt it will happen, but I don't think it's absolutely impossible. Direct-to-DVD, keep the budget as low as it can possibly stand, send it out into the world for all the Trek fans who still want to see something from the original universe. It could probably do some decent business that way.

In any case, it's the only chance we'd ever see anything live-action from the original universe ever again.

If they were going to do something direct-to-DVD with Star Trek, they should just go all out and take the 'crossover' route. Why not? After all it would totally be for the fans anyway, so no need to worry about establishing backstory for the uninitiated. I don't think they should just throw something flimsily together, though...it should be carefully constructed so that the crews coming together is natural and plausible.

I'd rule that out for Enterprise. The only way they could meet with TNG or DS9 crews would be time travel, and that's just too played out in the wake of the new movie. If Enterprise is to be revisited, it should be in a standalone capacity (especially after how much the TNG 'crossover' of the series finale pissed off so many people). Seeing the TNG and DS9 crews share an adventure would be a kick.

As for Voyager, the whole point of the series was to get back home, and they did, so there's no need to revisit that. I'm also not going to make suggestions for that just because I didn't like that show. :p But something to resolve the loose threads of TNG and DS9 would be very welcome.

Shameless plug for the Enterprise Direct-to-DVD campaign...

Got to admit a TNG or DS9 story would also be something I'd love to see. But my passion has always been to get Enterprise a better finale than "This Aint the Valentine".

I'm a sucker for reunions and all. Hopefully not in the epic fail, stalker way that Justin Lee Collins is...

I think there are ALOT of story opportunities in the 24th century now that
Romulus has been destroyed!

I would not mind at all getting a few Direct to DVD movies showing the aftermath of Trek XI on the 24th century "Prime" universe.

I totally agree.
The problem is any of the veteran Trek actors will want too much money.
If this thread gets more detailed it will get moved to Future of Trek for sure.

Well, obviously, salaries would be a problem, but the overall costs would still likely be minimal enough (compared to a theatrical release) to justify trying. As far as I can think, I can't imagine anyone being too terribly expensive beyond, maybe, Patrick Stewart.

As far as TNG goes, I suppose I'm just selfish. I want to see a conclusion to their story that's better than the one we got.

Ya Salaries could be a problem but like you said alot of these past Trek stars have not been doing alot lately. I mean Tim Russ practically did his role for Free in that fan made film "Of Gods and Men." So if they ever wanted to get Trek stars for a Direct to DVD movie I dont think their salaries would be budget busting for alot of them.

I thought about putting it there but I thought it was general enough. :)

Yeah salaries would be a big problem. A lot of the props might be gone too.

I can only hope if they do decide on a Direct To DVD release, they do ENTERPRISE.
Yes I would love to see a "Birth of the Federation" type movie showing the events Enterprise would have likely shown in its 6th or 7th season if it had one.

Thats a good point about the props. They would probably have to make alot of them sadly. But once they did it once they could re-use them for a series of Direct to DVD movies.

Since there's a new time line, props, ships (CGI or physical models) and costumes can all turn out looking different than in the original series.

With the original sets gone now, I guess a production designer would have to "NX-ify" recent interiors from the U.S.S. Kelvin, with flat panel monitors and island stations for science and tactical. How hard would that be, I wonder? The bridge itself was reused within the movie for the Kobayshi Maru test, so presumably survived filming. For the story itself, acknowledge the changes as a retrofit which occurred after the outbreak of war. An unseen skirmish took out the Enterprise's original bridge...
