Didn't like it? Still, you have to admit that...

You smiled a bit when "Spock Prime" first showed up.

McCoy's [introductory] rants about space travel.

Chekov's scene/troubles talking to the Enterprise computer.

Spock's "I didn't lie, I... implied." line.

Spock's "Since my customary farewell would be oddly self-serving I'll just say (does Vulcan salute) Good Luck."

I mean, even if you really disliked this movie you'd still have to admit it had some "moments."

The space-diver "red shirt", as poster below noted, you knew he was toast the moment you saw him!

I loved the movie, but not all of the moments you list here work for me. Spock Prime was handled very clunkily and most of his lines fell flat for me. But pretty much everything else in the movie was awesome.

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

The film most certainly wasn't without its isolated moments. The casting and effects were both great. It just that in the end all the good was undercut by the bad leading to a draw.

(emphasis mine)

Do you think you might be able to choose a better, less-confrontational word than "haters"? I'll be happy to edit the thread title for you.

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

This one was funny too

When Spock says: "The complexities of human pranks escape me." :)

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

Actually having watched the movie again. I found most of it lacking. Sorry but some of it was not good.

I particularly thought that making Scotty the new "Trek Jar Jar" was just plain bad. Engineering was (and most would agree) just plain horrible.

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

Well, personally I try to introduce the term mehsayers. So maybe that'll do instead of haters? :)

:guffaw:

That seriously made me laugh out loud. Nicely coined! :techman:

I am by no means a "hater", though I'm not a lover of this film, overall, either. That having been said, there were lots of little things that I liked quite a lot, including just about everything listed by the OP.

I also liked that I just knew our hapless 3rd "space diver" was in for trouble once I saw the color of his uniform, and Sulu's weapon of choice for the drilling platform fight. Backing up a bit, I also liked the little nod to the "re-education scene" from ST: III, where child Spock and his classmates were learning their lessons (and lots and lots of other little nods.)

But, don't get me wrong, there was plenty I didn't like. I woudln't want anyone to get the wrong impression and think I actually liked the thing. :p

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

Haters is too accurate for most Mods on this board. They can hate all they want, we just aren't allowed to call them out for it.

If you want to make a complaint about that, then do so, but this is not the appropriate forum for that complaint and repeatedly trying to hijack threads on other topics with it isn't cool. Please desist from doing so.

This thread is about what people who didn't like the movie overall still found themselves liking.

Which was close to nothing. haha

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

Which Spock? Not Quinto, and I was too annoyed by the coincidental appearance of Nimoy to smile. However, it was nice to see him.

McCoy's [introductory] rants about space travel.
Not really; I thought McCoy was a cartoon throughout the movie. De Kelley was warm and human - Urban was Daffy Duck only slightly disguised.

Chekov's scene/troubles talking to the Enterprise computer.
Nope. Cheesy, stupid and obvious. I like humor, especially in Trek, but a lot less slapstick; save that for the people who do it well: Monty Python's Flying Circus (or even Simon Pegg, occasionally ;)). It bugs me when people who can't write jokes fill a movie with them.

When Spock showed up.
You already asked that ... :wtf:

]Spock's "I didn't lie, I... implied." line.
A blown opportunity - even if it weren't completely accurate, it would've been so much better if he had said, "I exaggerated." This one was like blowing the punch line on a joke.

Spock's "Since my customary farwell would be oddly self-serving I'll just say (does Vulcan salute) Good Luck."
Nicely done.

I mean, even if you really disliked this movie you'd still have to admit it had some "moments."
Oh, it had moments - just not many good ones. I prefer a movie that doesn't work so hard to keep things moving in order to distract you from its underlying flaws; it's like the scenes in movies where the characters run across the rickety old bridge that disintegrates behind them with every step - as long as they keep running, everything looks safe, but don't look back ...

I didn't hate the movie - I'm just disappointed that it was so full of missed or blown opportunity.

It was really cool seeing old Nimoy Spock still alive & kicking. And I liked that line, "My customary farewell would be oddly self-serving."

And I did like the stuff with McCoy constantly injecting Kirk with stuff.

And Kirk eating an apple during the Kobayashi Maru simulation was a great prop call back to The Wrath of Khan.

Well honestly it's much easier to come up with things I didn't like them what I did liked.

Sure some scene's made me laugh but also made me shake my head at the same time. Yes some scene's were funny. But it wasn't trek. And I couldn't help to feel the writers completly missed the point of star trek.

To sum it up. I think it was a fine action movie but also a very bad Star Trek movie.
