Didn´t Kirk reprogram Kobayashi Maru cenario?

Re: Hasn´t Kirk reprogrammed Kobayashi Maru cenario?

Actually Kirk rebooted the system, while it was rebooting he was able to beat the simulator, hevan knows how long Windows version 3,465.12 takes to boot up 200 years from now, seeing how long it takes NOW.

I should think that cadets knowing that the Kobeyashi Maru is unwinnable would skew their character evaluation...

The simulation starts, and the ensign being tested yells, "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!"

My guess would be the test is thrown in during a battery of simulations they may be doing at that time. They may know they'll face a no-win scenario, but they won't know which one it will be. So, they play all of them to win. I mean, I doubt the no-win is the Kobeyashi Maru scenario all the time.

I certainly hope the movie simulation won't give the naval damsel-in-distress the name Kobayashi Maru, as it would be the least sensible of all options.

Then again, it's almost inevitable that the distressed ship will have that name in the movie. :(

Indeed. I thought all those tests Starfleet gave Wesley before he entered the academy - like saving one guy and leaving another - were Kobayashi Maru tests. They are designed to test one's character and see how far each cadet will go before giving up. Kirk obviously went so far he cheated.

Re: Hasn´t Kirk reprogrammed Kobayashi Maru cenario?

Exactly - although Wesley took entry exams while Kirk probably took a postgraduate test, it seems likely that Starfleet would keep testing its personnel that way throughout the training. And some tests would be fairly formulaic, like the one for which an entire room was built in "Coming of Age".

I wonder what we should make of the "psycho-simulator test", the failure in which got Merrick kicked out of the Space Academy in TOS "Bread and Circuses"? It's obviously a far stricter test than the scenarios we have witnessed, but the "simulator" in the name makes it sound like another "scenario-type" test.

A split second of indecision there is deemed utterly unacceptable. Perhaps we're talking about a test where the skipper must decide between what the books and instructors and the normal moral sense tell him to do, and something horribly reprehensible, and even considering the latter for a split second is fatal. That is, the test sorts out the dangerous psychopaths, rather than merely assessing command skills or whatever.
