Did you ever notice on the DS9 model...

I was watching "Once More Onto the Breach" and noticed for the first time there are gaps in the areas of the station that connects the habitat ring to the docking ring. Were they always there? Pics here:

Yes, they've always been there to my knowledge.

The gaps are on the studio model as well so it wasn't a CGI addition (or subtraction as it would be). I didn't notice them until "Empok Nor" and I thought it was just that station but when I gave DS9 a proper look I saw them as well, which makes sense since they are the same studio model.

...Why would the habitat "ring" be called that if it weren't a separate ring connected by spokes, rather than just a fancy bulge on the outer rim of some sort of a solid central disk?

I believe the other posters in this thread are discussing the pylons which connect the habitat and docking rings. In the screen caps above, each pylon appears to have two side-by-side "slits."
