Did Spock's actions kill... [Spoilers]?

Welcome to the board.
Thanks! Welcome to the board to you too.
Look, buddy, the other examples I used weren't off topic. They were relevant to showing how last minute events are unpredictable.

Let me use a more generic example.

Let's say that you are standing at the edge of a roof on top of a skyscraper. The police call your mom . They say, "Mam, you better come out here, your son looks like he is going to jump off a building." Your mom is at work. She jumps up and starts running out the door. On the way out, a coworker asks her what's wrong. She pauses just to say, "Paul's in trouble, gotta go." Then she makes a B-Line to the skyscraper where you are standing. You yell to the cops on the roof, "I just want to see my mom... Then I'll be OK." Your mom arrives and starts coming up the elevator as fast as she can. The cops on the roof tell you she's there, but you're like, "No! You're lying!" Just as your mom is about to open the door to the rooftop, you give up and jump. SPLAAAAT!

By your logic, your mom killed you, while in actuality, it's your own damn fault, buddy.

It's obvious you like to get a rise out of people. And I guess I'm as guilty as Dale, Jeri, or anyone else of feeding your desire to argue here. But I think you might notice that even the people who don't like the film, and there are a few, act like mature adults about it. They don't create mean-spirited posts just to stir up trouble. :vulcan:

Anyhow, most people come on message boards to make friends, not to make people tear their hair out in frustration. It's just a thought... :techman:

Amanda's death led directly into the elevator-scene -- a major plot development, which wouldn't have occurred without it.

also a good point. there would have been no "What do you need?" :vulcan::adore: without that scene.

I can picture the writers sitting around, going "lessee, now what would be tragic enough to make Spock accept ministrations of a love sort..."

I loved the scenes, btw.

Have we all agreed at this point that the very idea of Spock being responsible for his mother's death is evil and an attempt to attack his character? Do we all feel at this point that such a horrible attack against someone who's recently suffered a loss is intolerable? Is there ANYONE on this board who, at this point, has proved they deserve to be hit with whipped cream pies and poked with giant foam rubber fingers repeatedly?

Amazing, people who hated the film, people who loved the film, all sitting around singing kumbaya because we all can agree that Spock didn't kill his mom! It feels like a new day has dawned at the TrekBBS. :bolian:

Re: Spock killed his mother

Spock's mother came within seconds of surviving.

Spock needlessly wasted precious seconds explaining to Uhura why he was beaming down to Vulcan.

If Spock hadn't dillydallied like that, Spock's mother would have survived.

Also, why didn't Enterprise beam some random Vulcans up to save them?

And if he had ran faster to the transporter he would have saved her.
And if he eaten his breakfast faster, he would have reported to duty earlier, maybe encounter Kirk sooner, figured out what was going on faster...

See how that works?
Spock's breakfast is irrelevant. Any dillydallying he did once he knew the situation on/in Vulcan is relevant.

Let's take it a step further. If Olson had stuck his landing on the drill, the thing would've been blown up and the drilling could've been stopped in time to prevent the red matter from being inserted.

Blame Olson, I say. IT'S ALL OLSON'S FAULT! (Best yet, he's not around to defend himself.)

Apt. Very apt.

She threw herself off the cliff so that Spock could experience human love.

A saint, that Amanda.

If you ask me, Amanda's death was a missed opportunity for further Kirk/Spock conflict. Why?

If you notice, the pad she fails to materialize on was the same one that falling Kirk and Sulu were beamed to. They land on it hard and you hear an audible crack. I figured they might've busted the pad when they did that. So when Amanda failed to get beamed aboard, my initial thought was that, giant falling rock not withstanding, it happened because the pad was borked. I was a little surprised when that apparently wasn't the case. Because if Kirk's heroic but nevertheless reckless act of rescuing Sulu inadvertantly caused the death of Amanda and Spock found out, ooohhhh boy....
