Did Spock and nurse Chapel flirt a lot in the original series and in the animated series?

Again, I'm not arguing that the episode shows Spock is not attracted to the Romulan Commander of TEI. That's clearly the intent. I'm saying the episode utterly fails to convince me of it.

I really disagree with this. She's easily fooled throughout the episode. At no point does she even come close to realizing that Kirk and Spock are playing her. She's portrayed as so gullible that I honestly wonder how she came to command a ship.
which is why I think the whole thing was a deeper plot. Why would she grab onto spock as he was transporting out - and why would the romulan ship have shields down to allow spies to transport in and out? Seems to me that there was some sort of double espionage going on.

I viewed it as believable, for the reasons noted before: the history of real world soldiers or agents falling for someone from an enemy nation / group, and the racial element which would be naturally appealing to Spock.

Then the gullibility charge would apply to the 1701 crew as well, since they bought the Kirk-is-unhinged act hook, line and sinker, right up to the point where he was revived in sickbay. The Romulan commander--knowing even less about Kirk and Spock (despite hearing about Spock, probably through Romulan intelligence) would not know they were conning her. Considering the tensions between the two powers at that time, her suspicion that the 1701 was on a spy ,mission would be rooted in the political reality of the period.

Then explain the sudden surge of emotion. Was he just horny?

And there is nothing, repeat nothing, in the original series where Spock explicitly states one way or the other what his feelings for Christine are.
And there is this exchange in TOS S2 Amok Time:
(And for some further context to the following scene, at the start of the episode Spock throws a bowl of Plumig soup she brought him unbidden because she noticed he had stopped eating)
[Spock's quarters]

(Spock is lying on his bed, apparently asleep. Christine thinks about touching him and then goes to leave.)

SPOCK: Miss Chapel.

CHAPEL: Yes, Mister Spock?

SPOCK: I had a most startling dream. You were trying to tell me something, but I couldn't hear you. It would be illogical for us to protest against our natures. Don't you think?

CHAPEL: I don't understand.

SPOCK: Your face is wet.

CHAPEL: I came to tell you that we are bound for Vulcan. We'll be there in just a few days.

SPOCK: Vulcan. Miss Chapel.

CHAPEL: My name is Christine.

SPOCK: Yes, I know, Christine. Would you make me some of that plomeek soup?

CHAPEL: Oh, I'd be very glad to do that, Mister Spock.
