Did season seven really stink?

I can only speak for myself, so I say out of the whole 7th season the only eps I rate highly are:

Parallels
The Pegasus
Lower Decks
Journey's End (for the Cardassian/Maquis/DMZ stuff)
Preemptive Strike (see above)
All Good Things

That's six eps out of an entire season.
Pretty poor percentage, I think.

And then worse than that are the eps that suck, which take the season down another notch, eps I hate like:

Descent
Interface
Phantasms
Dark Page
Inheritance
Sub Rosa
Thine Own Self
MASKS!
Eye of the Beholder
Genesis
Bloodlines

Yep, season seven stinks.

Should have had more story arcs than bottle episodes. It was decent if not a bit strained.

It was pretty poor. So poor that I lost interest and stopped watching in its first run. If someone told me in season 5 that I'd one day stop watching Star Trek, I'd have told them they were crazy. But I think the true mediocrity began in season 6.

I didn't hate Season 7. My biggest problem was that you know it's nearing the end, why not switch the episode order of Pre-emptive Strike and Genesis? Then you can delete Genesis from existence and have an episode that features the main cast all together before the finale?

My only complaint was that it had too many family orientated episodes.

Geordi's mother, Data's mother, Beverly's grandmother, Worf's brother, Picard's fake son, so on and so forth.

Other than that season 7 was great.

Ah, I didn't remember that "Pre-Emptive Strike" didn't feature the whole cast. Not an episode that I remember very well. "Genesis" is actually the last episode I really like before the finale, albeit as an (unintentionally) campy guilty pleasure. I think that's a sign of the season's poorness. Good episodes that are only of the 'so bad, it's good' variety.

I think it was an average season. the eps I enjoyed were:

Firstborn
The Pegasus
Thine own self (the main Data plot)
Parallels (best of the season IMO)
Gambit
Descent Part II
All Good Things

The rest were so-so or terrible.

I thought Gambit was intended to be a rollicking, breezy adventure more in the spirit of TOS than TNG. The problem was the acting, especially from the villain. Instead of playing a guy that believed he was right, that he was justified, the actor merely played a villain, complete with a villain's voice, a villain's empty threats etc. He was bland and nearly sank an exciting episode.

I really like "Gambit." It's fun to see the characters put in totally different roles.(Data is captain, Worf is executive officer, Riker and Picard are outlaws, etc.)

I like Gambit, too. There is a bit of it that really sags for me, I think it's in the middle of the second part when Riker has got back to the Enterprise. But I really enjoy part one. Every time I watch it I wish that Picard and Riker'd had more opportunity to have adventures together. We rarely see them in this way off the ship, doing "stuff".

Since I happen to think every season of TNG had several bad episodes, the seventh year was not particularly weak to me. And when it did shine, it shone brighter than most other episodes, so I just skip the ones I disliked and happily watch the final year.

Agreed! :techman:

7th Season had it's share of clunkers. I think part of the reason was because they were putting so much energy into the feature film. Much of the staff were spread thin. I look at it as some missed opportunities, but overall a good season.

Same here. I find myself enjoying about 10-14 episodes a Season (Season four was unusually strong for me, I can rewatch a good 18 episodes).

Season 7 was no different. I even liked some of the episodes other people hated, like "Emergence".

"Sub Rosa" was plain stupid, but I watch it once in a while for the guilty pleasure of watching Beverly getting off  and watching the Scottish guy "Dae'not Ligh dha Caandal!!"

Individual episodes? Yes. The season as a whole? No. But then, the same could be said for seasons 1-6.
