Did Kirk's rather *enthusiastic* execution of Nero bug you?

Kirk.
Starfleet Captain.
Starfleet's finest.
....

Goofing on the guys he's about to kill...?

Not sorry for for believing he HAS to do it?

Has this alternate reality created a Kirk I can't look up to any more? Just another angry angsty texting post-teen that revels in his justifiable excesses?

Or did Nero REALLY ASK for it?

I actually really disliked Spock's reaction when Kirk offered assistance.

I would have liked it infinitely better if after Kirk said "You got it," he just turned the ship around as the Narada began to disintegrate in the black hole. Still the "holy crap" factor without the pedestrian crowd-pleasing blasting.:techman:
I could go either way and still find it consistent with the Kirk we saw in TOS. :techman:

Of course, if Kirk had simply turned the ship around and departed forthwith, we probably wouldn't have had the exciting "dire threat of being *schlurp*ed into a black hole, better eject the warp cores so they can go BOOM and throw the Enterprise free and yay, we're saved" thing going on, which is what Kirk was really smiling about.

Again, that's like Obi-Wan leaving Vader alive on and just figuring, hey the lava got him. As I remember the "Prime" version of Kirk rather enjoyed blowing on General Chang, complete with a clenched fist to underscore the point.

Okay, not "infinitely" now that you put it that way.:guffaw:

:guffaw:Maybe You should have ''worded'' that better. *either that or I need to grow up*

^ The risk that the Narada would be pulled into the black hole and emerge *somewhere else* - just like it did before - was too great. Better to simply destroy the fucker and be done with it.

Thing is, we don't actually see Narada get destroyed. Heavily damaged yes, but it still gets sucked into the black hole before we see any explosion.

How do we know Captain Archer isn't now fighting a Space Octopus?

I thought it looked like a Space Squid.

Yeah was just rereading that. Teach me to respond to posts without much sleep. To be clear I meant Kirk rather enjoyed blowing Chang up, complete with clenched fist.

That was a gesture of hopefulness of success.:techman:

Okay peeps, you have all made your points- I concede.
Thanks, but I still feel that a less *explosive* climax might have been more in keeping with original Trek idealogy.

But that's just me, I guess. Chang & Kruge weren't being sucked into an uber-hole. I just miss the days where Kirk offered a sincere hand to the Romulan wessel in Balance Of Terror...:vulcan:

Would you prefer he'd talked Nero down, made Nero realize how wrong he'd been, and make him willingly accept imprisonment with the hopes of maybe contributing positively to his new universe at some point in the future?

Sounds more like Snooze Trek to me.

Sounds like a flashback to TNG. ...the horror...the horror...

Space Octopus has been the official Trek BBS nick name for Narada ever since the original spoiler leaks described Nero's ship as having "tentacles like an octopus." We're not changing at this stage of the game.

We don't, but at least they tried.

And Kirk offered a sincere hand to the Romulan vessel in ST09. It's not his fault that Nero is a far bigger douchebag than the Romulan Commander in "Balance of Terror."

Because there was no super nova to combine with the red matter singularity reaction to provide it with the power to create a time vortex, it was just a standard black hole like the one that ate Vulcan. Possibly just a stronger event horizon due to the amount of red matter used to create it. And if not, the explosion from the Enterprise's warp core that followed it through would only have made sure of it's destruction.

So Nero kills Kirk's dad, alters the timestream, destroys a number of federation vessels, destroys Vulcan, tortures Pike, and attempts to disintegrate earth...

Kirk offers Nero a chance for survival... (Nero refuses)...

Hmmm...

Does it annoy me that Kirk then chooses to fire upon Nero's vessel?

Not a chance - infact, I'm surprised Kirk actually offered Nero an olive branch.

:) No - I think Chris Pines' Kirk is a far more compassionate Kirk than the one played by William Shatner...

EDIT: in fact it bugs me more that Kirk didn't smoke Nero sooner!

I agree with the he asked for it camp.

I believe his smiling had to do with knowing he'd won the battle, not with any blood-lust.
