Did Kirk's rather *enthusiastic* execution of Nero bug you?

This is a put-up "debate", anyway. You're just automatically gainsaying anyone who feels differently.
Ummmmm, not really. I'm accepting all different points of view, then responding according to my take on them.
Is this not what we do here?:vulcan:

I think the OP's point is well-considered. Thinking about it, Jim could have just allowed Nero and co to go their final way, if the singularity-as someone said, created with tremendous volumes of Red Matter, was by far able to finish the job itself, while he and the crew watched, maybe with Nero 'spewing his last breath at thee' INW...but Jim did give him a chance to accept help. Not a mood-killer, pardon the pun ,for the film, but, again, well-considered.
Thank you.:techman:

Kirk.
Starfleet Captain.
Starfleet's finest.
....

Goofing on the guys he's about to kill...?

Not sorry for for believing he HAS to do it?

Has this alternate reality created a Kirk I can't look up to any more? Just another angry angsty texting post-teen that revels in his justifiable excesses?

Or did Nero REALLY ASK for it?

He offered to try to save the Narada and take its crew into custody; Nero refused and re-affirmed his desire to continue his war crimes. The Narada had already demonstrated an ability to survive being sucked through a black hole and still represent a threat to those it encountered, raising the possibility that the Narada would either survive and remain a threat to the Federation or that it would emerge into yet another alternate timeline and threaten its inhabitants.

What, exactly, should Kirk have done differently under those circumstances?

I'm pretty sure that Kirk Prime fried General Chang even before destroying his ship simply so that he'd shut the hell up with the Shakespeare.

(In my personal continuity, of course. Chill, folks)

ummm..it was done to please the THEATER audience, so on that level..yes..I support it. It got a big round of applause which is, for star trek's well being, far more important than some out of date IDIC need for 'PCish' mish mash story telling...

No, Nero and his crew were none uniformed combatants who had committed acts of war. Kirks actions was just and practical.

I've got to agree. If nero had of accepted Kirk's offer of assistance he would have helped but he didn't. Add to the fact that the man destroyed billions of lives on Vulcan alone not to mention all the dead on the starships including Kirk's father.

Not out of character for kirk at all.

Anyone remember: "I. Have had enough. Of you!" from Star Trek III?

He's kicking a guy in the face to send him to his doom, and it's a wonderfully funny moment.

Kirk is not and never has been a super-serious character.

You got it. Arm phasers, fire everything we've got.
So, Judge Dredd in space, eh?

A brave new Trek 'Verse.:(
In case you haven't noticed my new avatar.:techman: Nero wiped out BILLIONS! Now I might not have had a smile on my face, but I'd certainly want to make sure Nero never killed anyone else again. And I definitely would note have wanted a trial for this Bastard now that he's one of the greatest war criminals in history. Someone that EVIL in my opinion does not deserve a trail.

Now that I think of it I might have said it more plainly: Nero and his crew were terrorists.

There are a couple of reasons I don't see this scene in a bad light:

1. Kirk offers assistance. I saw this as absolutely in character with Kirk. He shows the same "compassion" as he did when defeating Khan at the end of TWOK.

2. It was Spock who said "No way". If there is any beef about this scene, it may be with how Spock responds to Kirk's offer. But, you can actually understand Spock's reaction when you consider...

3. Nero committed genocide. He's a monster. Spock knows this, and it is a different Spock we have here vs. TOS. TOS Spock (or Spock Prime, whatever...) never had these events happen in his life, and I believe this is a logical result of these events for the character.

4. Nero did ask for it. 'Nuff said.

5. Kirk's young. What I liked about the movie was we weren't seeing the older, wiser, middle-aged Kirk, but the young, brash, cocky, trigger happy Kirk that we knew he had to be in his youth. Even by the time we get to know Kirk in TOS, he's not really this guy. But you heard hints about the kind of guy Kirk was in his youth. Now we get to see it, and I think Pine plays THIS Kirk to a tee.

Balance of Terror

Arena

Wrath of Khan

Yes, he is sometimes willing to off the bad guy if the situation warrants. You may have found that moment funny, but it was clear that Kirk was taking it VERY seriously. That dickhead was trying to pull him down into a lava flow, after all.

Points worth considering. As is Spock's established "cold" practicality when facing a clear threat.

I dunno. In the series, after half of his crew is horribly killed off by that week's monster, it never stopped Kirk to end the mission by laughing and joking around (usually at Spock's expense). :p

When was the last time a core Trek character did or said anything surprising? YMMV on the last bit.

The entirety of the Picard's actions in the TNG movies. Or does acting out of character not count? :p

Let's not forget, Nero and his cronies just broke out of a KLINGON prison and destroyed 47 Klingon ships. If a Klingon prison can't hold them, how do you thing a Federation one would?

Nero was a mass murderer responsible for biilions of deaths and he still offered him assistance. So, no it didn't bug me.

But I think that Captain Picard would feel bad after that, even though he did the right thing. It's just a matter of personality.

To borrow one of Shatmandu's bits: First he would call a staff meeting. ;)
