Did I violate airline security yesterday?

Yesterday when I got in line at the Southwest Airlines check-in, I asked the attendant if there were any new security rules for carry-on luggage (in light of the Detroit incident). I had two pieces that I wanted to carry aboard. She said there were no new rules. Then she asked me whether I had any liquids in my luggage. I lied and said "No." But to be honest, I did have a tube of skin cream in one of my bags. Is skin cream a liquid, as far as TSA is concerned?

My bags went through the X-ray machine without incident. I would hope that no one invents skin-cream bombs in the future.

Yes. You're on the watchlist with Cat Stevens now. That terrorist bastard tried to smuggle in some Prell. It makes your hair more shiny and manageable, and brings death to the Great Satan.

Maybe. It depends on how much it was, up to a certain amount is ok. Things like toothpaste count as "liquid" too in that regard.
But what does it matter if you weren't caught? The worst thing that could have happened to you is that they make you throw away the cream.

They may have missed it, but you'd know what you did, and it would gnaw at you for years. Eventually you might get to a point where suicide bombing seems like the only way out of your guilt. It's insidious like that.

I was on a flight to D.C. once when I pulled out my keys and realized I had left the swiss army knife thing attached to them. Ooops! Obviously security hadn't picked it up, either. I made sure to check it on the way back.

Let me get this straight: You lied to the security screener and are now asking if skin cream is a liquid :wtf:

Here's a thought -- Why not ask the screener?

Brilliant thread. Genuine LOL. :techman:

It highlights perfectly the fucking nonsense that air travel has become. A few terrorists and the whole world becomes a bunch of jobsworth pussies.

On topic, it depends on whether it was a hydrating cream or just a regular emollient...

Uh... because the line was long and I was trying to avoid further delays? :o

And I didn't lie to the screener. I lied to a Southwest Airlines staffer at the counter where passengers get their boarding passes.

Well, since it seems you can take liquid PETN on transatlantic flights, I don't see why Southwest should stop you from carrying skin cream.

Just sayin'.

Well, if it's this easy to get liquid on board, the terrorists can have a sigh of relief. All they have to do is say "No", and they're good to go.

If they bother to ask or check at all, which they don't seem to do in Amsterdam. Or so it would seem.
