Did i start at a good place for voyager?

A few weeks back i started watching voyager and i started with scorpion part 1. And now i am on the raven but i want to go back and watch essential episodes. I watched distant origin and favorite son but dont know what else to watch.

Frankly, I think you picked a perfect place to start. Scorpion is the show at its best, and S4 is pretty great overall. The first three seasons are mostly forgettable, but do have some standouts. Personally I'd suggest:

Faces
Cold Fire (the Kes parts are interesting)
Death Wish
The Thaw
Tuvix (You have to see Tuvix. Just so you can participate in arguments over it, if nothing else)
Before and After

For the most part though, S4 is where the show strikes gold, and 5-7 are a weird mix of really fantastic and really awful.

I'd also recommend going back and watching Caretaker, not only to see how it all started but also because it's an excellent episode.

Scorpion is a great place to start, and really where the show really picked up.
Before you get to Year of Hell, you should watch Before and After (although it's not at all essential), and Future's End is a good one (even if just to explain the Doctor's portable emitter, but it's a fun episode).

I'd also recommend going back and watching Caretaker, not only to see how it all started but also because it's an excellent episode.

Ditto. Plus there are some great episodes in Season 2 like "Resistance", "Death Wish" and "Meld".

What you really should do is to begin with "Caretaker" and watch the series from start, episode by episode.

"Caretaker" presents all the main characters in a very good way and by watching each episode in order you will get a picture of what happened up to the point when the events in "Scorpion" began.

Not to mention that I find the season 1-3 episodes much better than those in seasons 4-7. :techman:

Really? Season 1 was "spacial anomaly of the week", and while amusing, followed the exact same formula every week. Season 2 felt like a dull attempt to break out of that mould, and we got enemies like the Kazon showing up every second week. Season 3 was fairly good, but it was still only just finding its feet, and 4-7 felt like a substantial improvement, especially once they started using more CG and could experiment more with ideas.

Seasons 1-3 were better because the series did stay more to its original premise than it did later on.

All the main charcters did get their fair share of screen time compared to the later season when everything was focused on Seven, The Doctor and Janeway while the other characters were wasted.

Season 1-3 had more interesting encounters with new speices where seasons 4-7 were mostly about the Borg and TNG characters jumping on and off the ship at random.

As for season 1, it had only two rather weak episodes, "Emanations" and "Elogium", in season 2 all episodes were great except for "Threshold" and that episode was at least funny in some places and season 3 was good too, except from some weak episodes like "Blöood Fever" and "Real Life".

I don't feel like any season particular covered the original premise. They ditched that quite quickly. Season one hardly dealt with the characters at all. Season 1 was fun, but the characters were all cardboard cutouts at this stage with no development, and extremely formulaic. I found it entertaining enough to continue watching, but I didn't consider any of them great episodes.
Season 2 felt weaker to me as they tried to find their feet, and unfortunately included too much of the Kazon and Seska as the main bad guys.
Season 3 was a huge improvement and had a lot of great episodes, but to me it still felt like they were just starting to find their way leading into season 4 where it all finally came together. The inclusion of 7 of 9 created some good character interactions among the cast that helped improve the show.

As for characters getting screen time, I actually prefer that they dropped the weak actors like Chakotay and Harry, and focused on the stronger characters like Janeway, and The Doctor. Chakotay's episodes were easily among the weakest, and Harry and Tom didn't have much potential to begin with. Every other character besides Chakotay and Harry had a decent share of screen time, even if the focus was only the select few.

The first 2 seasons focused too much on the Kazon, who I don't think had any good episodes. The series improved dramatically as soon as they were gone. I feel like season 3 was a great season, but 1 and 2 aren't even in the same ballpark as the rest for me.

Seasons 1-3 were better because the series did stay more to its original premise than it did later on.

I know arguing with you about Voyager is like slamming one's head in a car door, so I'll keep this succint. At no point ever did Voyager live up to its original premise.

Thank you very much. I watched all of plus like 8 more.

Two things:

1. OP, just man up and watch the whole show from start to finish like a boss, would you? All this chopping and changing, you are gutting the show.

2. I've actually started rewatching S1 from Voyager and we're about 8 eps in. I'd actually forgotten how much characterization and 'original premise' they managed to cram into the early two seasons. There's tensions with the Maquis, supply problems, massive character development. Sure, they jettisoned these later on, but for someone who has spent literally years going on about Voyagers lack of continuity, characterization and lack of sticking to the premise to my gf, she is looking askance at me as all the episodes we've seen so far have these in spades. Sure, they're all about boring anomalies, but that's because the anomalies are just mechanisms being used to drive forward the characterizations. Colour me converted to S1.

Destructor: I'm glad you like it, but frankly, I wouldn't encourage ANYONE to watch all of VOY in its entirety (nor for TNG or DS9, which I both love, for that matter).

And drazz, glad you're liking the show.

EGAD. I have been saying this about Seasons 1 and 2 now for like... ever. Everyone's all like derp derp, nothing after "Parallax," derp derp.

No! That's why I like Season 2 (1's okay too, but I was happier when they stopped finding space anomalies so often) so much. I love what they did with it. Sure, "Threshold" was in there, but I thought it was full of very cool stories overall.
