Did First Officer James T. Kirk ever disobey his Captain's Orders ?

Re: Did First Officer James T. Kirk ever disobey his Captain's Orders

I'm sure in the line of duty he would've!

^Agreed. Plus Kirk (like Riker) used to be young and coky.

I don't know any plot details of the upcoming ST Movie. From what I've watched of TOS; Kirk's career arc probably was unique.

He has a captaincy at young age. This indicates he did something spectacular. When this happens and you vault past other officers it creates jealousy. In "Court Martial" it seemed there were plenty of officers ready to throw him under the bus.

I'm of the opinion that he bypassed being the XO. This wasn't because he finagled his way out of it. Extraordinary circumstances is a more plausible scenario. Every episode he seemed to be proving to himself and his crew that he deserved his command. Of course he had the abilities to go with it.

I always chuckle a bit at the way Star Trek (the whole franchise) seems to imply a good officer always disobeys orders. It can't help but seem this way since our Heros are always right and the Idiot Admiral (TM) is always wrong so of course they're absolutely obligated to disobey orders.

Kirk must've disobeyed every single order he was given in order to make Captain so fast.

What onscreen evidence do we have either way?

If by that you mean do we have evidence Kirk disbobeys orders from time to time? I say yes. He did disobey Starfleet orders to appear in the honor guard at Altair Three in order to bring Spock to Vulcan to save his life.

We also know he's a rule-bender. Reprogramming the Kobayashi Maru scenario so he could beat the simulation is cheating, yet he got a commendation for original thinking.

So just from those two instances, we know Kirk is a risk-taker, and certainly one of the biggest risks is defying the chain of command, no matter how justified. I'd say he probably defied at least one captain in his career and wound up getting away with it, for whatever reason.

No, we don't have evidence he served as first officer aboard a starship, but I'd say he served a short stint in such a position some time before receiving his first command, which probably wasn't Enterprise.
