Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

Yeah, Microsoft are all about the "Mobility of Experience" rather than "Mobility of Device" now. Which kinda seems daft when they're trying to build a devices business.

Eh, I find it kind of smart considering their Windows Phones are never going to take off. This way people still stay within the MS ecosystem of apps which makes them more likely to stick to Windows and not go for MacOS.

I get what they're doing in that regard, it's a smart enough move in and of itself. But it seems they're making their OS and devices superfluous. They may as well have dropped Windows Mobile and made their own Android phone. Which apparently is still their plan B.

Windows sales are all well and good, but I gather that MS Office is worth more to Microsoft as revenue centre than Windows.

So going cross-platform makes sense given the sheer volume of Andriod and iOS devices in the world.

We are seeing a shift in Microsoft's pricing/licencing with Office as well. Going down the Office365 subscription path on a allows licenced office on upto 5 pc's/marc and 5 mobile device per licenced user. Not so long ago it would have been an individual licence for each device.

So you could even go Mac and still use Office which makes money for Microsoft (though I'm not sure if Apple still funds some of the development).

Windows Mobile with v8 is good solid platform but long term I'm not sure how it's going to go - it's pretty only on Nokia for the most part (there were some others but not sure if they are still available).

Well with Microsoft buying Nokia's smartphone business all Lumia devices are Microsoft, there's a number of smaller manufacturers, Blu, Kazam, HTC, continue to make Windows Phones but they've basically Elop'ed themselves. They've made it known that they don't consider Windows Phone a long term product and will likely discontinue it, at which point you burn any bridges with people who like it, as far as brand loyalty goes.

Though some of those manfucturers have already burnt their bridges with customers by not delivering promised updates for Android (yes HTC I'm looking at you).

Though I wonder what the difference would be if there were more smartphones using an Intel chipset - would negate the need for an ARM port and they could run standard Windows apps with a major re-write/porting.

Asus have the Zenfone2 which uses an Intel Atom dual core (1.8/2.2Ghz with 2/4GB RAM depending on the phone model) that can run Windows but it's sold as an Android device.

no not really.

There are only 2 other tablets with the 12" or larger screens - the new iPad Pro and the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2.

The iPad Pro is new yes, but the Galaxy model was announcedin May 2014, the Surface 3 Pro was announced in May 2014.

The Surface Pro 2 only had a 10.6" screen so was bit bigger than what was normally seen (10.1 for the Samsung, 9.7 for the iPAD) but still not as big as what can be purchased now.

Has anyone had the original version of Halo Combat Evolved working in Win 10?

Just installed it only a few minutes ago and can't get any joy from it. I did get it working in Windows 7 a while back ..

I even tried that in program compatibility but no joy..

Always remember google is your friend (even when they are collecting your data).

A search will reveal that there is a known issue - however there was also a released last year that seems to fix the problem.

Odd this link didn't come up in my searches. I was searching for "Halo Combat Evoved won't work on Windows 10" and hit a lot of links but not that one.

EDIT: Well that really does suck . I just tried the patch in the link and this is the result..

EDIT EDIT: OK that's odd My game is Halo Combat Evolved but the CE patch in the link didn't work, the PC patch however did work... How odd.

Both patches are labeled Halo PC but one is labeled Halo PC CE which I assumed was the Combat Evolved edition. Anyway it's all working now.. Weeeeeeeee

Thanks for the link

Does the upgrade from windows 7 pro to windows 10 pro normally take 7+ hours? And only at 20% overall progress? The numbers are changing but it is really taking its time

For 3 years old, I didn't think it would be that bad. Now that it's done, after 10 hours, it seems to run better than 7.

Yeah, that seems like a very long time for a PC that's only 3 years old. Then again, if it was one of those really small budget Atom based PC's, I could see it.

Could be a combination of processor and disk speed. I know that one get's spoiled these days with SSDs.

That said still takes about 45mins for my system to upgrade when a new build comes out and that's on a i5 4590 and 128GB SSD.

It could also be some registry issue, or an access issue, or just hardware acting wonky with the software. My PC is almost 8 years old, and it installed Win 10 very quickly (after the restart due to a power failure *sigh*). It runs like a new PC with Win 10, too. So I'm very pleased with it.

I'm still tweaking the system but it is running very well. I would have thought that with having 6GB RAM and a hexcore AMD chip at 2.8Ghz it would not have taken all damn day. I really like that task manager now shows how much disk utilization a program is using.
