Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

My invite just appeared in my taskbar.

Signed up to get notified when it's released.

Did anyone else get this invite?

I was just coming to post this very same thing. Yes, I have Windows 7, and I received my upgrade notification about 20 minutes ago. I went ahead and reserved my digital download. :D

Yep:

The thing is Windows 8 is a spectacular bit of bad design.

They put what I think is a phone interface into a desktop environment and not only that an interface designed mainly for touch screens which not too many every day users would have access to. It's like they got so far into their project they could not back out and had to just go with it..

I am somewhat hopeful in regards to Windows 10.

We have Windows 8.1 on our desktop and the entire household dislikes it. What drives me nuts in particular is how complicated printing anything has become. Also, thanks to the design of our computer desk and my short little arms I can't use a touch screen on our desktop. I'm on a tablet so don't know yet if we've received an invite to upgrade, but I'll check up on that soon.

After some customization I don't really mind Windows 8.1 too much anymore. There's still a few inconsistencies and awkward clashes of Metro and the traditional design but it works.
I never see the Metro start screen. :p

I'm looking forward to Windows 10 because I like shiny new things and it can't be worse than vanilla Windows 8.

Touch screens suck for actual desktop PCs. Using your mouse is actually way faster than having to move your arm all the time.

In what way is printing more complicated? Seems to me like it's just as many clicks as before.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering what "reserving" entails:

You will be eligible for the upgrade even once the free upgrade period expires. Free upgrade period is from July 29th 2015 until July 29th 2016.

Also, GIVE ME THAT DIRECTX 12 DIRECTLY INTO MY VEINS

(even though the special version of DirectX 11 on my Xbox One already has some of the DX12 features right now)

I got it on both my desktop and my laptop. I'll try it on the laptop first (which already has 8.1), and if it's not hot garbage, I'll upgrade my 7 desktop.

You can also force the update right now I think.

  1. Open the Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools, and then fire up the Task Scheduler.
  2. Expand Task Scheduler Library, then Microsoft, then Windows, and finally scroll down to expand Setup.
  3. Click the folder GWXTriggers and on the far right hit Run.
This will only work if you have a legit copy of win 7 64 bit

This will only work if you’re running a legitimate copy of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1, have KB3035583 installed, and have all the latest updates....

But I'm wary of these steps .... Not game to try

I've heard that Win10 is going to be subscription-based. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

A subscription-based OS sounds like the worst computing idea I've heard of since Microsoft Bob.

I did and registered, even though I'm a little hesitent that this might mean bad things for the computer when the download is complete.

Yeah - I installed Start8 on day one and have never seen or used the metro interface.

I went with Classic shell but it's had the same effect.

I noticed the invite earlier but I'm not sure if I'm going to take the offer yet as I'm not having any issues with Win7 or 8.1.

Before any upgrades, I'll have to run some compatability checks. I'll probably upgrade at some point though.

I wholeheartedly recommend the upgrade for anyone who is hesitant. It's the best of Windows 7 and 8.1, and is reliable, stable, fast, and flexible.

^Good to hear. What are the discernible new bells and whistles? Is it 64-bit?

I got the taskbar 'invite' too, but like others hesitant as like my stable Windows 7 64-bit with classic shell. But awaiting delivery of new i7, so if general feedback is good might be tempted to go fresh on that.

Is that a serious question? Windows has been available in 64-bit flavors since XP. They're apparently releasing a 32-bit version of Windows 10, but I can't imagine why anyone would bother in 2015.

Everything I've heard from people who've used 10 is that it's pretty awesome. That goes for people who hated 8 as well as people who just love having the new hotness 100% of the time. If it pleases both crowds I figure it's gotta be on to something.

Anyway, the taskbar notification for it is just so you can sign up and let the system download (but not install) the upgrade in late July when it's officially released. You're not making a commitment of any kind by signing up, so I wouldn't hesitate on that.
