Diablo on PC

I just found a good copy last night via a thrift store and I got it to install onto my laptop. It loads ok, but when I try to play it, the graphics look like they're neon. Is there any way that I can get them to display properly?

I'm on a Windows 7 computer, that I get to run as Windows XP for the game itself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Edit:

Just figured it out...

Virtualization is the closest, but still doesn't work. Well, it can work. Most of the time however it doesn't do the job because of incompatibilities with 3D Acceleration. More over, its the incompatibility with DirectX 6, 7 and OpenGL. It can perform DirectX 8 and 9 functions well enough, but then it still doesn't have 3D accelerated graphics support so either the game wont load, it will look funny or crash constantly.

If you do get a game to work, as of right now, no. There is no way to hot link a shortcut to open the VM and auto start a game. Again, the whole point of these pieces of software is not gaming related, its legacy support.

Oh well :(.

There must be an easier way. Have you tried looking on Steam for a copy? That would be modified to work on modern systems.

I'd suggest searching for "diablo palette error" or something similar. Virtualisation is probably overkill.

Diablo is not on steam, no blizzard game is. They don't sell it via their own battle.net service, unfortunately.

Thanks John.

It looks like Blizzard still patches it! They have game patches from as recent as two weeks ago for it. Might give it another shot when I can. It was an easy uninstall.

I'm curious, how do I go about patching it? I've never patched a larger game like this before.

And the Internet Archive has it around there too. Might go that route for now.

Oh wow, I didn't realize any of their games weren't on Steam. Sorry about that. In any case, it sounds like a good case for a remaster, though I don't know if they'd really want to bother with it when they can make more money on Diablo 3.

I know I've run D2 on Win7 x64 with no problems. I can't remember if I ever installed D1, even though I have the CD.

I just found this dated Mar 11, 2016:
Blizzard rolled out a new update for Diablo 2 this week, bringing the action role-playing game to version 1.14a. It's the first software update the game has received since 2011, and it improves Diablo 2's compatibility with modern operating systems.

Yep - can confirm Diablo II works on Windows 7 x64. I know that's not the game you found OP, just FYI... if you can score a copy. Random_Spock, if you are really hurting for D1, maybe pick up an old junker laptop? You might even be able to find one for free.
