Ok, since I am finishing up my Babylon 5 watching, I am also going to start up viewing DS9 from start to finish. As a note, I love DS9 and it is the only Star Trek Series (and one of only 3 SF series) that I own completely on disk.
As my first review, I am going to gripe. The DS9 disks packaging (I have region 1 clear plastic case with a book backing diskholders) are for the amount that they charged for the disks, very subpar in production value. you have to be REALLY careful with them or they will break.
Episodes to follow...
My famous Reviewlets
Emissary - The best Pilot of the Star Trek series. One thing that I cought on the nth viewing was the look Kira gives Bashir when he asks Dax for a date at the airlock, like "WTF". It pace in the first part is ideal, meeting new characters one after another at a steady basis. Once you get to the wormhole, it starts to skid a bit, as the Prophets/wormhole aliens are so alien it can flip out the viewer. (Though I will give credit, at least they tried to make a alien ..well...Alien...)
I also have to give props to the set design and makeup. Both the Ds9 Trill and the Bajorians are some of the best example of "light makeup aliens" that star trek can offer. Also, I will give it bonus points as my mom, who hate SF in all forms, actually ENJOYS the episode. Which is like me finding a rap song that I like. the music is also done quite well. Also I always forget how nice Jennifer Sisko looks.
Past Prologue - Garak arrives, and is he very..shall we say, Takei... It is funny how they toned him down over time. Also the plot is not bad, It is very believable that a splinter group would want to ruin the wormhole so everyone would go away. Now it is not as memorable as some of the other episodes later in the series, but still a fine, solid episode.
"A Man Alone" - Not a bad episode, and a good idea, but for some reason its a very slow episode. Seems like nothing happens and the riot bit is almost cheesy as it so bad. I just never can get into this epsiode, even if it has cloning and other fun motifs I love.
