Dexter Season 5 (And 4) Spoilers

There are obviously spoilers to the end of season 4 in the season 5 spoilers / news. You have been warned... twice now. The show comes back in September.

Season 5 will pick up right where season 4 left off.
“We have spent the last month sitting around, talking and really debating how best to deal with the aftermath of [Rita's death]. We uniformly decided that we don’t want to jump ahead. We need to see Dexter go through the process that we’d all have to go through if such a horrible thing had happened to us. We need to see him doing everything from the big emotional things like grieving the loss, to the mundane things like arranging a funeral, getting the kids dressed, and all the other things that are usually done for men because their wives or mothers do them. They have no idea how to handle all of these things. As we saw, Rita was really the caretaker of their baby. It would be cheating the audience of their catharsis to not see Dexter go through that mourning period and see how it affects him or to not see him dealing with the blowback of what he essentially caused. So we will not jump to Harrison as a 5 year old yet.

Season 5 may not feature a Trinity-esque villain.
“John Lithgow is a tough act to follow. If there was ever a year that we could take a step back from the Big Bad formula and go deeper into Dexter and his psychology, this would be that year. That said, Dexter has a dark passenger that won’t go away no matter how much he yearns to be normal. That rears up and needs to be dealt with. He may even dive deeper after this traumatic loss of Rita. We are working on a way that feels original and fresh and unique to what he has just gone through. It cannot be the way it has been before. In [Season 1], he was terrified of any kind of intimacy because intimacy equaled being discovered. Then he slowly realized he had a need to be known and he set up a family and tried the best he could to balance it all. And now, he sees what being known brings him and he had it ripped out from underneath him suddenly and that will have some affect on him.”
Dexter will remain single… for now.
“Anything is possible, but I don’t think Dexter will be in the mood for dating or love anytime soon. That’s not even on our radar right now. He very much loved Rita and they were in a good place right before she was killed so that wound will take quite some time to heal.”
Michael C. Hall kicked cancer’s ass.
“Michael’s in full remission. I just had a three-hour breakfast with him this morning. He’s in great shape and is getting his energy back. We are all very excited to get back to work. The guy is incredibly courageous and worked hard all through last season despite being sick. He’s an amazing human being and actor. It was scary, but the show will go on. We start shooting in late April or May, which is usual. We will not have to stall production.”

Interesting. I know this is supposedly the finale season, but I don't think it will be, I still believe a 6th and finale season will be made.

i kind of hope this will be the last. Seems like a good note to end on. The Big Bad they speak of, being his Dark Passenger. And Deb closing in on his past. In any case it will be epic!

I have a feeling they will blow it.

I think 6 seasons would be better, this one deals with Deb finding out and next season Dexter is on the run or something.

They should go 6 seasons. This one with the aftermath of Rita's death, and then a final season that wraps up everything we wanted to see, with Deb finding out.

I think a really bold direction would be to make Dexter fall into being an actual serial killer (well not that he isn't, but I mean one who gives up on Harry's rules). Maybe he goes into hyper-vigilante mode and starts executing people who rob a bank or smack around their wife - ie crimes, but not death penalty type crimes.

Sounds like they already want to do a sixth season, too. Hopefully it will be the last. The show can't go for much longer without some major changes, and I don't think they want to do that.

Yeah, It sounds like they are planning for a sixth year. I'm okay with that as long as they know what they are doing, which they almost always have. Last season was one of the best yet.

You never fully recover from cancer.

This is how I see Dexter Season 5 is going:

  • Dexter's world is kicked off-kilter by Rita's death. He has difficulty processing the emotions he's feeling caused by his loss.
  • When Paul's parents step in to take custody of Rita's kids, Dexter makes the decision to allow them to take custody feeling guilty over Rita's death and thinking that the kids are better off away from him than around him.
  • After that, Dexter goes into this hyper-vilgilante mood Stone Cold Sisko talked about and starts expanding the perimeters of the kind of people he can kill. I don't see him going off killing innocents but instead of just killers, he goes off and kills rapists, child molesters, robbers, etc. This change in Dexter's M.O. is brought on by his unsettled rage over not being able to make Trinity suffer for what he did to Rita's death since he already killed him. His rage-driven killing spree catches the attention of the police.
  • Meanwhile, Dexter deals with everyone treating him with kid gloves after Rita's death. Quinn tries to make a bit of effort while secretly suspecting Dexter may have had a hand in it. I don't see Deb and Quinn becoming a happy couple with Quinn's descent into Doakes mood. I do see the possibility of Dexter killing Quinn to protect his secret, using the fact that he's a bit of a dirty cop for stealing money from the crime scene to justify Quinn becoming one of his victims.
  • Instead of being an actor to play the new Big Bad, I'm thinking Dexter's Dark Passenger become the Big Bad of Season 5 and his personal war with it becomes central to the season.
  • By the end of the season, after visting and calling up the kids from time to time, Dexter decides to become a present father to them after his period of personal isolation comes to an end. Dexter may threaten Paul's parents into giving back custody of the kids if they strongly resist Dexter's decision.
  • I also think by the end of the season, Deb finds out Dexter's secret by piecing together certain things over the course of the season after finding out that Dexter and Brian are related in the Season 4 finale.
Looking back at all of this, I too think it would be a good idea to make Season 6 the final season to give us more time to explore the change in Dexter and Deb's relationship when his secret is open knowledge to both of them. I see Deb going through an emotional tailspin for a few episodes after being dropped with her brother's bombshell. Another interesting storyline for Season 6 would be LaGuerta bent on bringing down Dexter while suspecting he had something to do with the murder of Quinn who shared some of his suspicions about Dexter with her prior to his death.
