Details rediscovered the next time around.

It's a fascinating thing rewatching a series. You tend to pick up those "little things" that you never noticed before. Some of them are significant plot developments for later on, while others are simple touches to polish up a scene or add a bit of detail. There are plenty of people who are so much sharper than I at observing these episodes... but it's still rather cool to pick up on them nonetheless.

For example, when I recently watched "Last of the Time Lords", I noticed something about after the Master's death. After the Doctor has burned his body, we see a female hand with red nail polish pluck the Master's signet ring from the ashes. And you hear a faint bit of laughter that sounds an awful like his. I had not noticed that lauighter before. Now I'm wondering just when the Master will return.

I know there have been other little revelations liek that for me, but I don't recall them at the moment. Anyone else have a particular favorite of these little details that you might have missed the first time around?

Oh yes, it's happened many times, although I did catch those that you mention the first time.

One example is in "42" when Martha calls her mother. Mum can't speak too freely and is asking where Martha is, etc, plus she's dressed in her bathrobe. I believe this conversation is followed up in "The Sound of the Drums" as we see that Mum is still dressed in the bathrobe :)

Atmos. In the premiere of season 4, there's a taxi in the background of one shot with an Atmos sticker on its window. I didn't notice it the first time - plus, it wouldn't have meant anything. After seeing the Sontaran two-parter, I went back and noticed it ... it's small, but it's there.

And he'll knock four times.

*knock* *knock* *knock* *knock*

The Doctor: "Oh, hello. Can I uh....can I.... I don't mean to be rude, but why would a Girl Scout knock on the door of a Police Box?"

The Master: "The Universe has a perverse sense of humor, dear Doctor."

Gosh, I think I have seen every single episode of (new) Doctor Who at least 4 times now...so it's tough to remember what I initially missed.

At the end of "Blink" Larry Nightingale goes to the store and comes back with the tiniest carton of milk ever - it amuses me.

Also, in "Gridlock" I didn't catch the reference to that painting with the first couple in the car under attack.

Half of the dialog in "The Doctor Dances" about bananas I didn't get until rewatching.

This screencap shows that it's a pint of skimmed - I buy one of those every morning!

:D

Do you? I've never seen a jug that size. Here, anything smaller than a half-gallon comes in cartons. half-gallon and gallon sizes are plastic jugs. The things you learn. :)

You must have watched "Blink" a bazillion times to be disinterested enough to watch a milk carton. :p

Actually, I've quarter-gallon jugs over here, though never anything smaller than that.

Also a homage to the end of the Flash Gordon movie.

(IIRC) Go back early enough to the 10th Doctor and Rose, when in Britain, and you'll see campaign posters for "Saxon". I do know the campaign posters appear early on.

Actually, I think the first Saxon referance is in Love And Monsters. There's a newspaper headline about Saxon, I believe.

That's it, when Kennedy - or rather, the Abzobaloff as he's not in his disguise - is reading the Daily Telegraph at his big desk, the headlines say thigns like 'Four more months of government paralysis' and 'Saxon leads polls by 40%' But it's not really thatclear on screen, you need a hi-res copy of the publicity shot to zoom in on to make it all out.

When was the first mention of the Medusa Cascade? Was it in "Fires of Pompeii" ?

The Medusa Cascade is first mention in Last of the Time Lords. After the Doctor's failed attempt to steal the laser screwdriver, the Master taunts him about the failure by naming all the accomplishments the Doctor has made, among them "sealing the rift at the Medusa Cascade."
