Destiny Book 3 extract in new Star Trek Magazine

Yeah, you can't please anyone. But I thought it was best put on another thread when the question "Why are there gay people in Star Trek?" was answered with "Because there are gay people in real life, imagine that." And just like in real life, people complain about it in the books. It amazes me that people who claim to like Star Trek are at the same time a bit closed off about issues of equality.

I know what you mean, I've been thinking the same thing since all of this "(whatever) agenda" crap started.

Very true Marco. Its what makes us human. But I also think it was Gene's belief that some of those views would shift more towards enlightenment.

I see a lot of liberal quotes and political slogans in people's signatures here, I don't think that is a coincidence. I know more people who have a liberal agenda that flock to Star Trek's message and storytelling. I'm not saying that makes us right or wrong, but I think it does fit into the view and message Gene was sending.

^One person's enlightenment is another's nonsense.

It makes me uneasy when people start talking about Gene Roddenberry as some kind of messianic philosopher. It's perilously close to L. Ron Hubbard territory, and I would hate to see fandom go down that road. Not that I have any serious expectation that it ever will...as long as we keep things in perspective. :)

If I was an American, I'd be a Democrat. with Presidents like Jed Bartlett and Barack Obama you can't go wrong.

^Rightly or wrongly, people of every stripe want to see their sensibilities validated.

Damn stripe people and their stripy agenda...

Roddenberry wasn't any kind of philosopher; if Star Trek really had any overt and consistent ideology, from TOS through Enterprise, it wouldn't have the diverse fanbase it has. (Or, for that matter, the diverse criticism it's received, from leftist academics to conservative Christians.) Even when he tried to live up to the "Roddenberry the philosopher" image during his lectures it was obvious that there was no depth or substance there. He left no manifesto or scripture to follow.

But whether Roddenberry and by extension Star Trek is all about liberal secular humanist utopianism (which seems to be the most common interpretation) or not, there are some things Star Trek is definitely not about, and those things include prejudice and discrimination on the basis of difference. Which is not such a bad thing.

^I don't disagree, but the reality is that there are self-professed Star Trek fans who don't share that perspective...which of course raises the inevitable question of what draws those fans to Star Trek. I've never gotten an answer to that, but it's interesting to contemplate.

I don't consider Roddenberry a philosopher, nor his word the gospel of how to live my life. But I don't think it is wrong to consider some of the things he wanted established with his universe. I know some things are inevitably different, but most of us still honor his belief that looking towards the future should show progress, not regress. I don't think that is perilously close to L. Ron Hubbard territory, I just think it means being a fan. Doesn't make my specific interpretation right, but it also doesn't make it wrong or crazy.

I guess it could all come down to an argument over equality and equal rights.

I rather think that whole IDIC idea was inspired. Was that Gene's idea, or another writer, though?

And back to the original topic, I'll be scooting by my "local" Borders tomorrow to look for the new issue of the mag. It's not really all that "local" since it's 30 miles away. They closed the bookstore that was just around the corner to put in another damned shoestore. :scream:

I think it was his, because he introduced it into the show mainly in order to create a piece of merchandise which he could feature in the show and then sell by mail order. So it was inspired as much by the desire for profit as the desire for peace and equality.

I doubt Roddenberry would have had any problems with achieving both goals with one set of actions in any case.

Let me know by private message or on here if it's there please Karen - I'm trying to get a good feel of distribution patterns and anywhere where we can improve it ready for next year's high demand!

Just updating this thread to say that copies of issue 141 (STM 14 US) should now be available around the UK - a bit quicker than recent times.

I got mine today, and so far Paul, I'd say you'd excelled yourself this time. Some nice pieces.

Thanks - but the credit goes to the writers. I can only take credit for the movie piece! There's another "alien race" themed issue commissioned for after the movie coverage...

Finished the magazine today, couldn't help myself.

Loved the Tasha/Sela piece, and KRAD, great job on Kirk the Maverick.

Nice interview with Pine, and I'm so looking forward to this movie.

What have we got to look forward to, Paul? And aren't you the one who decides what goes in??
