I wouldn't borrow money from any third party source. If you REALLY need it then ask for a meeting with your bank to discuss your options. Do you mind me asking what it is for?

I need it for 2 things, unexpectedly high electricity cost - and to get my car through its MOT - I do need the car as I use it for work.

I don't know what the "MOT" is...but it's not worth risking your life with a loan shark.

It's a mandatory annual inspection for defects in vehicles that are at least three years old. I believe some US states have a similar requirement, some only when a vehicle transfers ownership, and a lot don't.

Most US states have something similar, including the one where I currently live.

Seems to me that it's better to be in violation on your car registration than it is to be indebted to a loan shark for 900 quid.

But hey...that's just me.

Given the choices, I'd ride around in violation for as short a period as required to save up the money - or acquire loans (perhaps even from an employer against future pay??? Or family members???) rather than get in debt to a criminal.

The government can fine you...but they won't break your kneecaps or shoot you in the head.

Trouble is without a valid MOT I'm pretty sure your insurance would be null and void.

Yeah, you wouldn't be able to get a tax disc either -- the police can probably impound your car, and crush it if you don't pay up.
