Design the Next Enterprise

Let's take another look at this puppy...

I've give you the hoods on the Bussards, mainly just for the sake of argument, but I'm not seeing the neck. Probably because unlike that kitbashed monstrosity that JJ foisted on us, this one actually flows together and is properly proportioned.

I have to admit that I like this, but mostly as a work of art one would see on a ready-room wall. I wouldn't mind seeing it as a calendar centerfold.

It's not bad. Well balanced looking and clean. I'd get rid of the bussard covers, make them red, and clean up the pointless styling around the main deflector dish.

Hoods...no matter what the styling is will always be a trait of Ryan Church's design.

The Bi Section Neck will always be a trait of the Ryan Church design no matter what the styling.

Ryan Church set a precedent with his design. It's distinctive. No other ship uses takes the dorsal Neck and creates a clear bisection from top to bottom dividing thinner from thicker. This picture even blends it into the contoured bi section at the front of secondary hull.

Both the hoods and the neck were done by Gabe Koerner on his Enterprise well before Church. The Church design almost looks like the E-A(or B or C) to Koerner's E in fact.

When I first saw the nuprise, my first thought was (other then ugh) was that they ripped off Gabes nacelles and secondary hull (and stylized them), and blatantly TMP's saucer.

And before people rip me a new one, I'm not a new Trek hater- I just don't like the ship.

I hate that ship it's awful in all the right ways.

While the don't care for the broad strokes of the nuEnterprise (in that the altered proportions don't quite work for me), the general '50s car influenced aerospace aesthetic is gorgeous – as the illustrations in MadMan's Excelsior thread demonstrate.

What a horrendous use of the beauty of Excelsior. I wish they'd come up with their own designs to ruin rather than ripping off and demolishing well formulated design masterpieces. What is this obsession with the delusion that one can improve upon perfection?

That's a little harsh, isn't it? Jetfreak's drawings, and my model, as it is evolving, are simply an idea, of what the Excelsior might look like, if they re-designed it to appear in a future movie. What's wrong with that?

I don't see any obsession or delusion about it at all... or that anything was ruined... we're just having a little fun with the subject... that's what all this is about, right?

If I recall correctly, didn't Star Trek Fandom reject the Excelsior at first? And, wasn't it designed and built not to be as attractive as the Enterprise for Star Trek 3, since it was supposed to be a "bad guy"?

Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.

Can't people put their own spin on things anymore? Isn't that how art, writing, music, comedy, performance, etc. have evolved to the levels they have in culture?

Or is experimenting to put your own spin on things now considered absolutley taboo?

Not that I ever heard of. It was designed by ILM and if it was designed to less attractive any of the Excelsior concepts would have done as but the clearly took steps to refine the model.

The point is I think being inspired by a design is different from plagiarism. In my history art work I have never plagiarized someone else's work as to literally transplant someone elses work onto my own and pass it off as my own. Art does have standards. My reply to people that mimic others work is ignore it.

At this level one should be striving to produce an original work, like DJ Curtis, and Sean because art isn't taking someone else work and putting your own spin on it and that may upset people like Largo, but as a drafter and artist I'll up hold those standards because it leads to better work and originality.

MadMan the majority of that saucer is the work of Nilo Rodis and Bill George. The rest is inspired work bu the saucer is nearly an exact replica not just inspired.

I have a distinct impression that these will not be accepted when 50% of judgement is originality.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall MadMan saying he was going to submit this to the Enterprise-F contest. As a matter of fact, I didn't think it had anything to do with the contest, did it? That link was to another thread entirely.
