Ryan Church set a precedent with his design. It's distinctive. No other ship uses takes the dorsal Neck and creates a clear bisection from top to bottom dividing thinner from thicker. This picture even blends it into the contoured bi section at the front of secondary hull.

Both the hoods and the neck were done by Gabe Koerner on his Enterprise well before Church. The Church design almost looks like the E-A(or B or C) to Koerner's E in fact.

Gabes Design isn't officially a Trek ship.
Likely Abrams wanted certain features.

There is literally no chance in hell they didn't see Gabe's design at some point beforehand. Clearly Church and crew drew from the design elements they liked. Being 'official' doesn't put it inside a bubble.

But it's just as likely that Church and Kroener both were inspired by the headlights on classic cars:

Ultimately it's just another fan design. It didn't debut in a movie or series so I can't credit it as first with those particular feature other wise I have to consider every fan design under the sun and every concept sketch the graphic designers ever done.

Let's take another look at this puppy...

I've give you the hoods on the Bussards, mainly just for the sake of argument, but I'm not seeing the neck. Probably because unlike that kitbashed monstrosity that JJ foisted on us, this one actually flows together and is properly proportioned.

I have to admit that I like this, but mostly as a work of art one would see on a ready-room wall. I wouldn't mind seeing it as a calendar centerfold.

Arguably nacelle "hoods" date back much farther...

... just on the back ends of the nacelles.

Also arguably the Ent-D nacelles were "hooded" to an extent.

That's a real hard one to understand to how much officialism such publishing will mean.

Wow, Dac, that is a great design. I love how it looks almost organic. I'd go so far as to say that it's my favorite design yet (and I'd pretty much lost interest in this whole thing with the amount of utter crap I was seeing).

While the don't care for the broad strokes of the nuEnterprise (in that the altered proportions don't quite work for me), the general '50s car influenced aerospace aesthetic is gorgeous – as the illustrations in MadMan's Excelsior thread demonstrate.

When I first saw the nuprise, my first thought was (other then ugh) was that they ripped off Gabes nacelles and secondary hull (and stylized them), and blatantly TMP's saucer.

And before people rip me a new one, I'm not a new Trek hater- I just don't like the ship.
