Design the Next Enterprise

Seeing as the saucer seems to be a thorn in everyone's sides, what do you all think of the following?
I really never had a problem with the saucer aside from that dimple thing in the first version you showed, but the tons of windows on the sides of the engineering hull need to be cut back a little. If there was a bit more space between the rows, they would look better.

Actually, the first thought that popped into my head after seeing that shot was "cruise liner"... which may just fit (not knowing the STO universe), since the ENT-D was something like that with the families onboard.

The sponsor's reps would probably just slap their foreheads and go, "Oh no, not again!" (similar to some potted petunias ;)).

Although I can't enter this contest I've got an idea from a few years back I could play with. I should dig it up and play with it just for the hell of it.

here's where I'm at right now
F-Layout1-.png

I'm doing this in CAD right now so that's why it looks . . . interesting . . .
the cyan lines are 'hidden' . . . I haven't figured out why my linetypes aren't showing up

[edit] oh, and the saucer and secondary hull lines should be more rounded . . . had my curve resolution set too low

BUT THOSE NACELLES! WOWIE-WOW-WOW! That Coke-bottle shape is giving me wood. You need to develop them, maybe even as stand-alone items.
You seem to have a thing for nacelles. :p

And one more hat in the ring. This is one of the ideas I had that I fleshed out a bit to see how it flys. Keep in mind the nacelles are preliminary haven't gotten to the final I like yet. Oh and the silhouette is not exact as it was taken from an earlier drawing.

Dac - I like the Galaxy style saucer personally. Though I will say that the version with the Dauntless style saucer looks pretty sweet too.

The finished version is gonna be somewhat more refined. What I've got so far is just a rough cobbled together mishmash to get the general idea down, and give the whole thing some bulk.

Whoa, I like that one, alot. :) It definitely fits the style of the game, too. :)

Science Officer, I can't help but wonder what it would look like if you changed the direction of one of the sets of pylons? If you make them thinner and reverse a pair so they make an angled loop, it might spice it up a bit and break the uniformity of it.

Hi Dac,

I was thinking about what asymmetry could be introduced into the model. The more I thought about it, the less I liked the idea.

The problem is this. I want to introduce asymmetry on functional grounds opposed to purely artistic ones. For example the saucer is normally asymmetric because of the bridge or because gravity defines up and down, it makes us consider deck layout. At the moment I have no details on where things are on the ship, so I can't make decisions on that basis. One reason for changing the pylons might be because of phasers or torpedoes. But I'm not sure it's a good idea to have weapons mounted near your propulsion systems.

So I do want sone asymmetry, but for the right reasons.

Thanks for the input. Cheers,

S.O.

Here is the germination of my ideas, sorry for the poor art. As I said before, I have never even attempted to design a Star Trek ship before. However this design contest intrigued me, so I thought I would give it a try. It is only a side view, but the basis of the Nacelles is the USB symbol covered by armor. I know it doesn't come thru in this sketch but if I get around to the front view it will be easier to see.

Here is my sketch, don't laugh.
