Usually I am completely on board with elimination of shoddy 'coincidences' that integrate characters from multiple versions. But reading the news clips about the role for Shatner in XI, I found myself disappointed they didn't do it. How poignant would a Shatner voiceover about the Kirk/Spock friendship have been over the montage of young Kirk receiving his promotion? In some ways, every time I see this movie in the future, I will picture this scene this way...
