Defying Gravity UK Thread

I didn't even know those existed. Do I have egg on my face...

Anyway, Space Odyssey, what exactly is that? Is it an educational series or a fictional one or somewhere in-between?

It's a dramatised documentary done by the BBC a few years ago. It was about an international mission to survey the planets of the solar system.

Yeah, too much sex really.

Frankly I thought the model of Space Odyssey was perfectly good enough for a whole season of TV. I would have liked to have seen an educational show that simply used the dramatic storyline as a framework to impart information and create realistic dramatic situations with particular regard to the science.

Absolutely no need for constant interpersonal shenanigans. However, it is what it is, and it is that fairly successfully.

After our Defying Gravity discussion earlier on in the year, I got Space Odyssey. It was surprisingly gripping, well acted and the special effects were very good. The Venus episode had me on the edge of my seat.

I still haven't seen it... Do I need to track it down?

Yes. You need to track it down. Thoroughly entertaining, and very informative.

^ If you are DLing, try and make sure you get the British version. The American version cuts out the Pluto mission to fit in their silly adverts.

Well, if it's a DVD rip it won't matter since both versions are the same.

I doubt actually, thinking about it, that a TV rip of the US version even exists since the British TV rip was already out there so you'll probably be OK.

Just bumping this thread as a reminder it starts tonight on BBC Two and HD at 9 and it's 2 episodes.

Yeah, thanks for the reminder.

Hm. Overall I'm not sure what to make of this series. It may very well live or die on whatever the hell that arbitrary 'Beta' thing is supposed to be (that is the thing controlling heart murmurs and up to other mysterious stuff, no?) and of the two crises we've had so far, one came from a character's neuroses and the other from an unexplained accident.

This makes it less a series about the perils of space exploration and more a one about destiny, pre-determination, pregnancies and prophetic dreams... or something. Though I'm not sure why we need all this when regarding a theorectically low-key and quasi-realistic premise like a manned mission travelling across all the planets. Is that really too weak a premise to be supported on a TV show?

Music was eh; while the title and end themes are agreeable enough there's some rather bland incidental work.

Arbitrary thought: There's an offhand reference to YouTube. I dunno, will YouTube still be around and (presumably) that popular in fifty years? I suppose if it is it's been radically upgraded. There's also an offhand reference to abortion being illegal, which is an interesting extrapolation into the future (though I suspect it's there to provide for some drama somewhere down the line or force the heroine into having the baby).

Still, I didn't dislike it by any means and will probably check it out next week as well.

Well if it's full of sexual imagery I'll miss it all.
Well I've not seen it, but since they're describing it as Grey's Anatomy in space I assume there'll be quite a bit of sexual shenanigans going on.
Just caught the first two episodes (by chance) this evening. Grey's Anatomy In! Spaaaaaaaace!™ is not that far off from what I've seen of it.

Although many parts of it seem like LOST In! Spaaaaaaaace!™ (No, not "Lost In Space"...)

I'll stick with it, though. It held my attention quite a bit.

^You're not far off, when they first started talking about it they did say they wanted it to be like Lost meets Grey's in spaaaaaace!

I watched the first ep, which I enjoyed enough to keep watching, I'll catch the second tomorrow.

There is a series like that, now in its fourth season and still going strong. Amazingly, it doesn't require much more than computer graphics and scientists yakking at the camera in order to make boring old science perfectly entertaining (a lot more entertaining than Defying Gravity ever managed to be). Don't underestimate the entertainment value of the plain ole documentary. Science fact can be fascinating without any sugar coating at all.

A lot of unnecessary sugar coating getting in the way of the educational value. The acting and plotline were pretty meh, but not as annoying as Defying Gravity, but certainly not good drama in its own right. They would have been much better off to just focus on one thing and do it well: documentary or drama. Combining them just results in one part half-assed documentary and one part half-assed drama. It still amazes me that anyone would see it as a model for a series (not that Defying Gravity actually was inspired by it in any meaningful sense.)

Reflecting on these first two episodes, a lot of maybe needless emphasis has been put on the sterilisation of crewmembers, pregnancies, contraception, talk of procreation, etc. Sounds like somebody's tempting fate (the show's writers, most likely) - and I can't help but feel that some fidelities are going to be sorely tested in this series.

Watched it last night. I like a few of the actors in it, but I can't say I was impressed by the show.

Probably have a look or tape it next week though just to see if it improves any but it does clash with other things which I've preferred so far.

I've seen a few episodes ahead and for those of you expecting less sex more space. Get ready to be disappointed.

I'm persevering though because space-based Sci-Fi is so hard to find now days. After all I did watch 3 years of Greys Anatomy until I realized it was more about sex then medicine and gave up.

The first 3/4 episodes aren't really indicative of how good this show becomes at around episodes 6 and 7.

The Voyage to the Planets comparison is obvious, and the influences are easily evident, however ultimately this is more drama and less docu than Space Odyssey.
