I forced myself to watch this episode just as one final effort to find something good about this series. Blerg. Doctor shit is boring. Where are the alien planets!?!

Steve is ugly, fat and stupid. Can he just be airlocked like, now? And send Paula with him, for being incredibly grating, in fact they're all grating, except for Ron Livingston, who is becoming boring, and the Israeli doc, who has now become a walking war-movie cliche, complete with guilt-over-the-schoolkids-he-killed(TM).

I'm done.

Um how alien are you talking about, becuase the series takes place in our solar system.

I'm liberal minded. Anything other than Earth would be alien enough for me. ("Alien" doesn't mean I expect alien life forms, btw. Just the alien planet would be fun to see, rocks and clouds and stuff.)

I recently watched the fake documentary this show is based on, Space Odyssey - Voyage To The Planets, and that was interesting, exciting and gripping.

When I saw it, I thought it was hokey, dumb and screwed up what could have been a pretty nice documentary, if they'd just managed to stay focused on the science and cut the corny dramatics. Not a big fan of mixing drama with documentary. You just end up with the worst of each. But regardless, it makes Defying Gravity look like Blade Runner. :rommie:

Honestly I just don't get the hate hurled at this show. Is it a classic? No, but it's a step in the right direction in terms of having a SF show that doesn't feature action and is more about the act of exploring space. So flawed as it is, I find myself easily overlooking them and just enjoying the ride and thankful that the show is trying to be a little bit different from what most people expect from a SF show.
I've seen duller or stupider shows championed by many posters here but that's just a matter of opinion. I guess there aren't enough C4 explosives and Bwah ha ha villains to entertain some people in this forum.

I saw this show for the first time last night. What episode number is this and can someone give me some background to it? They are going to Venus? How are they going to survive the extreme temperatures?
This was episode six (of 13), and the Antares is making a grand tour of the solar system..or so that's the intended plan. A previous mission to Mars ended in tragedy,

with 2 astronauts killed (they were left behind), and a mysterious artifact codenamed Beta seemingly manipulating events for some unknown purpose.[/spoiler]
Sigh.. How the frak do you do spoiler tagging here again? This is beyond annoying.

Hulu has the first 6 episodes up now..

This was the 6th episode of a planned 13-episode season. (All 13 episodes have been filmed, so if the US network cancels it, there will still be a complete arc for DVD and international broadcast - the show is co-produced with Canada, the UK and Germany).

In a nutshell, the show takes place in the mid-21st century. The Antares is on a 6-year "grand tour" mission that is to take it to Venus and several other planets. In the first episode we learn that the mission -- including the choice of crew -- is being influenced by something called "Beta" which has not been explained but which at present appears to be some sort of alien or spirit, which may in some way be connected to an incident on Mars 10 years earlier in which the captain of Antares and his No. 2, Maddux, were forced to leave 2 astronauts behind (one of whom was Maddux's girlfriend)..

The show alternates between "present-day" and events from 5 years earlier when the crew of Antares was being chosen and undergoing training.

A few pieces of the puzzle that have so far been revealed:

- The crew of Antares (and a few people involved on Earth) are having their DNA resequenced, and they don't know it. Everyone apparently has the same DNA now, or something (not fully explained yet).
* Beta has chosen the crew, causing qualified individuals to be not chosen, while including puzzling choices such as the out-of-shape computer geek guy.
- The crew of Antares are required to wear "HALO" devices, which inhibit libido. The oversexed German astronaut, Nadia, seems to be either immune or not bothering to wear one.
- A storage pod on Antares apparently contains either Beta itself or a link to Beta. When the captain opens the pod, he finds himself back on Mars.
- In this episode and last, crewmembers are starting to see hallucinations of people they've lost.
- Zoe (the blonde) is experiencing long-term guilt over taking an abortion pill in order to remain an astronaut. She was impregnated by Maddux, although he'd gotten a vascetomy (it's implied that Beta has, for reasons unknown, reversed it).
- Only the captain (Shaw) and a few people on the ground know the true nature of the mission. According to last episode the crew is supposed to be filled in on what's really going on once they get to Venus.

There are more bits and pieces, but those are some good ones to get started on.

The show is not intended to be an action show. It's meant to be a drama about the people, with the whole Beta thing just being a macguffin. Folks tuning in expecting to see BSG or Star Trek will be disappointed. Those expecting a slowly unravelling puzzle like that on Lost will find it worthwhile, at least IMO.

I don't expect to see it survive all 13 episodes on the US network, but hopefully, like Merlin, it'll be a big hit elsewhere so those of us who do like it can at least get the DVDs for later seasons or catch it on a cable network.

Given all 13 have been filmed and ABC already paid for the rights I'm sure it'll finish the 13 episode run. Whether ABC decides to pick up a second season is TBD. ABC does not have the power to kill the show on its own because of the international partners, but if the companies producing the show see the low ratings in the US and expect an even lower license fee next season, then they may be forced to cancel the show regardless of how it performs outside the US.

It's probably quite reasonably priced. They don't do a lot of CGI and it's filmed in Vancouver.

This was the second time I recall they've done this for this show. Yah, I'm afraid it's dead Jim. Besides, it's almost time for the fall series to beging again & 'Brothers & Sisters' occupies that time slot, maybe it'll get the Saturday death slot & be picked up on a cable network in the US. It would work well on SyFy I think, somewhere on the Friday night area w/ SGU & Caprica. That or they could fit it in w/ Wherehouse 13 on Tuesday, maybe move Eureka there, both seem to have good ratings which could work for a good show looking for a good home.
