Defiant Class
PUNCH
Very good punch power, can probably dish it out equally as good as the Galaxy class. Difference is punching endurance, Defiant can keep punching powerful blows like crazy for 5 rounds but its got little fuel in the tank to back it up.Its arms start to drop and there is nothing left to throw
If they stand face-to-face the Defiant loses
Galaxy can do 12 rounds easy, it has 5 times the power or 3 times the phaser banks, warp power, watts, 3 times the torpedo tubes to back it all. Defiant runs out of gas by round 5
FOOTWORK
Insane footwork, Jackie Chan on steroids. It can duck it can backflip. Try to hit this girl and its Chop Fu you're going down suckas. PS Yes it has an illegal cloak.
DAMAGE SOAK
Good damage soak, high capacity shield system, arguably has much better armor since it was designed for war but it will have weaker shields. With less watts of power to back those shields up, after blocking the first few blows, the Defiant can only block the next few blows by taking them straight to the face. Not a great damage soak technique if you ask me
BRAINS
Defiant is an extremely smart ship, but not as many science feats to back her up.


Galaxy
PUNCH
High punch power, doesn't really have anything on the Defiant power wise but the difference is the Galaxy can go the distance. She is a marathon runner not a sprinter who burns out after 5 laps. Galaxy keeps throwing deadly punches round after round. Punch power Galaxy takes it since Defiant burns out much quicker
FOOTWORK
Some good moves, she's Fast has Maneuverability, it can duck but the Defiant out classes her here
DAMAGE SOAK
Good damage soak, high capacity shield system, high density armor, high durability. The problem is this Galaxy is a much bigger target to hit, it will be forced to soak up many, many blows
BRAINS
A super smart ship, with hundreds of super science feats to back them up, give Enterprise a combo of the Dr. Soong machine, the lovely telempath, O'Brien, Riker, Geordi Picard and its overkill, the Defiant is suddenly f*cked by a bunch of braniac whizz kids. The Defiant is suddenly paralyzed by weird time distorting radiation
or worse ...
Sisko will watch helpless as Geordi hacks into the control panel making the ship EXPLODE

I always thought it was weird that they upgraded the Lakota's engines, shields and torpedo launchers (to fire quantums) and yet, never gave her phaser strips. I can just imagine it now...

Admiral: "Look at her, isn't she a thing of beauty?"

Admiral: "Yup. New, faster engines, better shields and they even upgraded the torpedo launchers to fire those new quantum torpedoes."

Admiral #2: "Actually, we've run into a bit of a problem there."
Admiral: "What kind of problem?"
Admiral #2: "The money kind. As in we're out of it. Budgets gone."
Admiral: "Wait, what? But we had money allotted for new the new phasers!"
Admiral #2: <flipping through a clipPADD> "Looks here like we had a cost overrun on one of the internal renovations and had to tap the phaser funds."
Admiral: "What internal renovations? Astrometrics? Engineering? Holodecks?"
Admiral #2: "No, looks like some jackass on the advisory committee pushed for...<flips though the clipPADD some more> a king-sized jacuzzi, an expanded bar in the lounge, and something called a 'Hooters'."
Admiral: "...really?"
Admiral #2: "Yeah, so we had to cover the overrun with the phaser money."
Admiral: *Ahem* "Wow, that uh, that sucks."
Admiral #2: "...It was you, wasn't it?"
Admiral: "...maybe..."

Wouldn't Starfleet vessels have the command codes for other Starfleet ships? I mean, Kirk disabled the Reliant's shields in TWOK. With that said, I would say that if an Excelsior class vessel nearly took out the Defiant then a Galaxy class wouldn't have any trouble.

Well if you go by the all the video game theories(armada, starfleet command, legacy), a galaxy class would win, but that's because they did it for game balance. It cost alot more to build a galaxy class than a defiant class.

But the defiant in ds9 would probably beat picard's enterprise. Just because defiant carry quantum torps. pulse phasers, ablative armor, and its faster and more maneuverable. And throw in the cloaking device, enterprise D wouldnt stand a chance.

I'll admit this is a bit pedantic but the dialogue doesn't say that the Defiant only needed one more hit. Dax says that the Defiant's shields are almost gone and some damage report and Kira then says the Lakota is in worse shape and one more hit will destroy the ship. Benteen calls Leyton and indicates that she can't stop/disable the Defiant and Leyton then says to do whatever it takes including using quantum torpedoes and that the orders are now to destroy the Defiant.

I do think that's a bit pedantic. Framing the original orders the way Leyton did was what Benteen had to fight under. Going all out with torpedoes would've been disastrous for both ships, I would imagine. The way Leyton issued new orders to use torpedoes were what drove Benteen to realize her grave error in starting the battle. Likewise, Benteen (her big, bulging eyes say a lot, hah) seemed well aware of the punch that quantums would cause, and that would probably be overkill.

Besides, quantums > phasers, as always

By the way, is the OP talking about THE Defiant or a regular run of the mill Defiant? The Lakota battle implies that it's modified ship vs. modified ship, and that had it not been for the DS9 crew's installation of ablative hull armor, the Defiant was expected to be disabled.

seeing as all Defiant class ships look identical I'd guess they were all fitted with ablative armour.

You can go either way, there isn't enough canon evidence to fully support or refute any position like that. Though, I would like to think that IF Defiants weren't normally equipped with the armor, they were after the Lakota battle in preparation for the Dominion.
