Defiance Season 2 Discussion

Has the game been discontinued?

These two properties are inextricably linked.

If one of them is above ground, then the other most surely is too.

Theoretically, the game can survive independent of the tv show. Granted, its popularity would plummet dramatically if the show's cancelled. I logged in on a whim last night and it was already a whole lot emptier than when the episodes were airing.

Boutique networks can survive on lower ratings and have lower expectations for their programming which is why they can air complete shit and not worry so much, since their advertising revenue per second is considerably lower than Network TV, that sponsors accept lower ratings as a given because they are paying less per second for their ads to be aired.

The link above says that things look good, even though it's a month old.

NBC owns Syfy.

Did not know that.

Here are the actual ratings if the raw data means anything to you.

I found this site which is following any news regarding renewal or cancellation and even includes ratings for each season 2 episode. And this expands on the possibility of renewal vs cancellation.

Basically, nothing's been announced either way yet, but a third season seems likely since SyFy has renewed other shows in the past which were getting equal or even lower ratings, such as Haven.

Though production cost could also be a factor. Struck me the other day while watching - - it does have a fairly large area are of outdoor sets that I'd say were specifically constructed for the show as well as location shooting.

^^That's true, and I considered that but didn't mention it in my post since I don't actually watch Haven and have no basis on determining which has higher production costs. You'd think Defiance would since it has more CG effects and more actors who need to wear prosthetics, but you never know.

I was totally looking fwd to every new Defiance ep this season, more than any shows I can remember recently.

I will be a bit cut if they don't renew it. I'm planning to rewatch season 2 in October, already rewatched season 1 before this season started.

I waited out the whole of season two so as to 'shotgun' all the episodes and I'm just about to finish the two-part finale.

I have to say, I'm really digging the characters on this show and how they've developed.

You can really see the influence of Rockne S. O'Bannon in the creation and implementation of this show and it's world. Very much a spiritual successor to Farscape

There had better be a Season 3. Syfy hasn't done jack shit for me of late and with the cancellation of WH13 & Being Human US, I've got nothing holding me there now save for Defiance.

Oh how the mediocre have fallen even more.

IMDB lists him as a developer.

Rockne only has 2 writing credits, the pilot, and no producer credits.

He's long gone.

I'll admit, I never watched either show, but I was under the impression they ended of their own accord as opposed to being cancelled. Hell, even if they were cancelled, they both went for 4-5 seasons, which very few if any shows on SyFy go beyond anyway.

And it was odd how they used those 6 episodes.

They took 6 (or more accurately 7.) stories and and squashed them into 6 hours of programming.

It was weird and breakneck.

No doubt, yet I was talking about the development and implementation of the world. His influence is there in the fabric of the show. He worked on Defiance for 9 months before stepping down to do another show called "Cult"

Rockne helped create the fraking show.

Excerpt from an interview with Rockne S O'Bannon: (http://www.iconicinterview.com/2013/08/07/rockne-obannon-farscape-revolution-defiance-cult/)

When you were asked to develop the “Defiance” universe, what did they give you as the premise that you had to run with?
They knew they wanted to have some sort of town with aliens and humans intermingling, but the other versions they had were all a little more amorphous, and I looked at it and said, I’d love to do something that takes on the classic tropes of the John Ford Westerns and television Westerns. I thought that was a great starting place for this, but not to play it like a Western at all. As I kept saying to everybody in production and to the writers — this isn’t retro. They’re not reverting to the 1860s. It’s 30 years in the future, but it’s a world where technology has been churned under, for the most part, or at least conventional technology. I came up with the idea that the town of Defiance is built on top of the old St. Louis. St Louis is down under us, so the St. Louis Arch, we’re not seeing the whole thing — we’re really only seeing the top portion of it. But it gave us opportunities for stories that would allow us to go down into subterranean St. Louis. And then there was Nolan as the sheriff. The different races were already established by the game folks, so then it was just a matter of plugging in who was doing what. The Tarrs — Datak, and Stahma who is the Lady Macbeth. I was involved for the first nine months and brought in the staff — and in the meantime, Mark Pedowitz took over The CW and he was aware of the script for “Cult” from when he was at ABC, and the first pilot he ordered as the new president was “Cult.” So suddenly I get a call saying the CW wants to produce “Cult” as a pilot, and I was in the enviable and not-so-enviable position of having two shows, both of which I loved, in front of me. “Cult” was my baby, so Syfy was very cool about letting me go. Kevin Murphy, whom I had hired as my number two, an experienced showrunner, himself, has done a fantastic job [taking over "Defiance."] So I transitioned over onto “Cult.”
Did you have any part in the casting of “Defiance”?
Grant Bowler is the only one. We had obviously looked at other names, but in terms of someone who is so poised to be a star of his own show, Grant was it. He’s a great action star, but his relationship with Irisa, his adopted daughter, is just fabulous. He carries the show!

Cancelled and Ended are the same thing. Anything else is semantic. And yeah WH13 got a wrap-up but they were cancelled. It was a money issue plain and simple. Admittedly they both had semi-decent runs for Syfy but again they're gone now for whatever reason.

The world of TV is not "what have you done for me", it's "what have you done for me lately", and Syfy hasn't been keeping up with development of very much new material. The only other shows they have propping them up right now are Canadian imports from Showcase (Lost Girl & Continuum) One of which is ending next year, and the other still TBD.

Bitten is garbage, Helix & Dominion are bland/boring and Haven never hooked me.

So yeah, 1 show does not a network make.

Dominion got better.

The first episode was awful, and it took me a month to summon the courage to watch episode 2.

But once you suspend disbelief and find any tolerance whatsoever for the choices made by the wardrobe department...

It's Romeo and Juliet in the future.

They also have Almighty Johnsons now, but I have no idea if many people are watching.
I wonder if Rockne O'Bannon regrets not sticking with Defiance?

Yeah, at the moment there are some pretty slim pickings on SyFy, but they got some interesting stuff coming up over the horizon. I plan on checking out Ascension and the adaptation of James SA Corey's The Expanse novels. Plus, they also have an adaptation of John Sclazi's Old Man's War novel series in the early stages of development.

Hmm.. Scalzi on TV could be very interesting, but I'm losing the faith overall.

Sadly enough, I think the same troubles affecting Syfy, have also been affecting USA of late considering the ratings slides and basically the disintegration of their Characters Welcome philosophy.

Burn Notice is gone.
Psych is gone. (Though admittedly they stood behind that show pretty well)
White Collar is 6 episodes from Gone.
Royal Pains is TBD (Sadly ratings have been down)
Covert Affairs is TBD (Ratings have been way down)

Suits seems to be the one shining bright spot that isn't a newish show this year.

Of the newbies...
-Satisfaction has been decent so far, but I'm not looking forward to years of artificially dragging out the premise.
-Haven't seen Rush yet. Haven't seen any marketing about it, nothing.
-Graceland is technically a sophomore show I think, but it hasn't hooked me.

Rush is quite good.

The lead is pretending not to be British, but I keep hoping that Miranda Hart is going to fall through a door way and somehow misplace her dress (again) while being completely ridiculous.

Also. Rush is eactly the same premis as Royal Pains. Well, if you remove the mansion and the family values, exactly the same. Concierge Doctor on the go. Although, he seems to be making 50 to a hundred thousand a day, and has no overhead... What the hell is he doing with all that money!?

Satisfaction annoys me. The girl playing the Mum is French and she finds it difficult to hide that when her character gets emotional. The male lead is Australian which is why his acting has almost no nuance, even though he had 4 years on the Glades to get that Sorted.

Graceland is fine. Heavy continutity which I like and morally flexiable heroes who are not quite sure if they are heroes at all anymore becuase they keep having to do horribly awful things to save the day.
